Trump is powerless as his legal fate spins out of his control

Analysis by Stephen Collinson, CNN

Updated 1:12 AM ET, Tue August 21, 2018

(CNN)President Donald Trump may no longer control his fate, a plight that helps explain his increasingly volcanic Twitter eruptions.

Trump's persona -- in politics, business and life -- relies on his self-image as the guy who calls the shots, closes deals and forces others to react to the shock moves of a master narrative weaver.

But as a legal web closes around the President, he's in a far weaker position than he would like, a situation especially underlined by the bombshell revelations that White House counsel Donald McGahn has spent 30 hours in interviews with special counsel Robert Mueller.

Trump reacted to a media frenzy over the McGahn revelations in characteristic fashion: by launching a new Twitter assault on Mueller, taking new shots at his new nemesis John Brennan and diverting attention with newsy comments on the Federal Reserve.

But sources told CNN on Monday that the President was unsettled that he didn't know the full extent of McGahn's testimony and had remained agitated through the weekend, believing the latest developments made him look weak.

McGahn's conversations with Mueller are not the only drama that is leaving Trump waiting on events, rather than dictating them.

The BEST horses! Surely the horses can fix this! Especially if we use ALL the horses! Why haven't you people tried using the horses yet?

who is secretly recording him and who all was recording him the past couple years. I can picture him looking around and seeing enemies and snitches everywhere, even family. And surely some of these people must be Mueller moles.

The damage he's done to this country in the last 19 months is shocking and sobering. Cheeto may be powerless when it comes to preventing the law from coming down on him and his family - eventually. But that won't stop him from taking down the country along with him.

We Democrats and NON-CRAZY people need to take steps to stop him from destroying us. We must get out the vote this year and every year!

government, he could have wreaked far greater damage on the country and the world. It has only been the GOP enablers in Congress that have allowed him to accomplish as much as he has. Most of the damage he has done can be undone over time, although what he did to young immigrants is unspeakable and may never be fully healed. As for taking the country down with him, he no longer has the credibility or authority to do that. Yes, get out the vote and kick those fucking Publican bums out of office. Then sit back and let Mueller do his work. The wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine.

He's not waiting for Congress, because they are (mostly) sitting on their butts anyway.

Sadly Obama set the precedent for over-reaching EO's when he was in office, even though his intentions were good. He made it possible for any future POTUS to do the same, precluding the checks & balances of the legislative branch. Now Trump is doing exactly that, and he's proceeding to erase all the good things that Obama accomplished.

And more Fake News: Obama did not over-reach with Executive Orders. When Congress refused to act, he issued Executive Orders. Name one Executive order that was an example of "over-reach." Obama is not to blame for the fact that Trump is an asshole.

I didn't mean that the way it sounded. Not blaming Obama. But I know he resorted to EO's many times when he couldn't get the legislation out of Congress. I agree that it's nobody else's fault that Trump is an asshole - except Trump!

Thanks for setting me straight, friend.

And it is looking more and more like he is in a situation he cannot control. He is not used to being in this position and it is driving him nuts. Or should I say nuttier.

This won’t get easier for tRumpolini as the long arm of the law pokes its way up into his bizzzness. We will get to watch in real time as he struggles to get a grip on this situation. I envision a bug, trapped in a spider’s web, trying to escape but only getting itself further ensnared. He will be responsible for his own troubles, as we’ve known all along. I hope other are learning from him that it will be easier and faster to just tell what you know and take your lumps if you deserve them.

Trumps victims, people like you and me are the ones that are powerless.

We are powerless as we suffer under his cruelty.

Meanwhile, Trump lives the life of a king. literally in every way.

He will never see the inside of jail and he will probably die as old man and wealthy man in the lap of luxury.

His victims will never get to see even a single a day with even a sliver of the power he wields.
