Man plunges 22 stories to his death from Manhattan hotel, lands ON TOP of SUV with driver inside

Man plunges 22 stories to his death from Manhattan hotel, lands ON TOP of SUV with driver inside, who escapes from wreck unscathed

A man jumped to his death from the roof of a midtown hotel Thursday morning, crushing a Cadillac Escalade that was parked across the street as the driver sat in the SUV drinking coffee, police said.

The apparent suicide occurred at 8:55 a.m. at the posh Peninsula Hotel on Fifth Ave., near 55th St.

The man, identified only as a 40-year-old from Florida, jumped from the sun deck of the 22nd-floor fitness center, landing on the Cadillac Escalade on 55th St. across from the hotel.

The driver of the luxury SUV said he was inside the SUV having a cup of coffee as he waited for his passenger when he hard a “loud boom” that made him duck.

“When I looked up, I saw my whole passenger side was crushed in from above,” said the driver, Engel Nicasio, 37. “I thought it was a construction accident or debris from a building.”

Rather than why.

My heart goes out to this person and his family who could probably give a rat's ass about what shit-fuck vehicle he landed on and how that owner felt afterwards.

Typically, news coverage of suicides tends to respect the privacy of the affected family. It is unlikely that the family is interested in news coverage, and whether it focuses on what he landed on, why he did it, what brand of cigarette he smoked, or anything else.

The family of the vehicle owner, and particularly the family of the momentarily absent passenger, are probably shocked by their brush with death or serious injury, and narrow avoidance of it.

The big question is whether the auto insurance company will make a claim for reimbursement from the estate of the decedent.

The person that wanted to die wanted to die and there are plenty of ways to do that without affecting people outside your family and friends too much.

I once saw a woman commit suicide by jumping from a freeway overpass into busy oncoming traffic. The driver of the big truck that hit her locked up his brakes but there was nothing he could do. I still remember the image of the truck tires smoking and her legs flailing as they went over her. That was 23 years ago. The truck driver was absolutely innocent. It was traumatic for me to watch from maybe 60 - 80 yards away. How much more traumatic was it for that truck driver? Someone wanted to die and chose his truck as the instrument of their death.

Sympathy for the suicide and the family is fine, but ignoring the effects of a public suicide on innocent bystanders is heartless.

I feel sad that this still haunts you 23 years later. She must have been in such agony to want to die, and to be willing to die that way, but if you're still remembering it this vividly, I can't bear to imagine how the driver of the truck that hit her must have felt and maybe still feels. So sad for everybody involved.

It was indeed heartless of her, but I suppose anybody in such terrible anguish just isn't able to consider the feelings of anybody else. How awful.

I actually meant I found flvegan's post heartless. I should have quoted the part that bothered me.

"could probably give a rat's ass about what shit-fuck vehicle he landed on and how that owner felt afterwards." shocked me.

I don't really expect rational, considerate behavior from someone who's trying to die. I meant that to think that what happened to the owner of the vehicle this man hit wasn't important seemed pretty heartless. A man chose to die in a very public way that had the potential to kill or injure others, and how that affects others is worth considering. It wasn't an attack on flvegan, whose posts I've read for years and almost always liked - I replied quickly because I was shocked.

you have a story you want to report on. you want to report facts. there are a couple of living witnesses. you talk to THEM. and you don't make up shit about WHY this person jumped. there is no WHY yet, just the person that could have been killed by a person who obviously cared about no one more than he cared about himself...oh, and the other poor person who might be traumatized by witnessing another human being splattering on the car/pavement.

your heart to the family...fine. but the other parts of your post are heartless and sensationalist bullshit.
