The death of Mollie Tibbetts is a profound tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. When I was a young man a friend of mine, a young woman who taught me how to play backgammon, was killed by serial murderer Gerald Stano in Daytona Beach. She went missing, the signs went up, and she turned up dead. Stano offered her a ride, she got in his car, he asked her for oral sex, she laughed in his face, and he stabbed her to death. Her name was Mary Carol Maher.
I didn't draw any global lessons from that. Anybody that draws global lessons about immigrants from Mollie Tibbetts ' murder , illegal or legal, were never going to vote for a Democrat anyway.

(872 posts)This was a National story, that was being closely followed. I know, because I was following it. Over a month with no discovery of a body, or even confirmation anything had happened to her for certain.
Now to have it be committed by an illegal immigrant, just gets that aspect out there. Like the killing in San Francisco. But Mollie was a big news item for several weeks, and momentum like that does not go away. His trial will be covered and it would have been had it been someone completely different. If anything, it could be attributed to the fact it involved a young white woman, but the bottom line, is it's very, very sad that she is gone. She sounded like a nice person, and was just out for a run, and no doubt felt completely safe, up until the moment she realized she wasn't.

(10,034 posts)There is already backlash, among non-Trump worshippers, in condemning a whole group of people because of the actions of one. Having a prominent Republican that knowingly employed the man that committed the murder might bring up some interesting discussions that the GOP has thus far been avoiding.
