Not the the theory that the trolls keep promulgating around here--that rMoney will suddenly dump everything & there will be nothing to find, but one starring Henry Reid, who is playing coy with his source.
I'm betting that ol' Harry has something more to dump, & he's stretching out each morsel for maximum effect, dropping a new tidbit only when the media start to tire of the last one. He's leading with teasers, with the big bombshell(s) to come after the Conventions.
Think October Surprise.

Timing is everything. You want to start raising suspicions among the uncommitted, but not let them rise to the point of scaring the Republicans so badly before the convention that they go all chickenshit & nominate someone else. You also want rMoney to get all crazy with his denials & not release his returns before the convention, again not wanting to prompt the Republicans to dump him. You want to deliver the political death blow after they've locked in on him.

(18,998 posts)Reid is no dummy about how politics works, and if he wants to defeat the GOP that is how to do it.
And Rmoney is arrogant enough to think he can get away with it cause the GOP has in the past.

I dunno--the Adelson-rMoney connection doesn't go back more than a few months, but
Reid: Nevada Gaming Commission; Adelson: Big-time Nevada casino mogul.
Most likely nothing here, but I put this up in hopes that it might trigger some thought/speculation/whatever from people who know more about this stuff than I do.

(61,650 posts)Clearly Reid isn't worried that this issue is going to backfire. Reid strikes me as a conservative, careful politician. Not one known for doing or saying risky things. I think he knows that Romney didn't pay taxes for years, or he knows that Romney will never release his tax returns to disprove the accusation.
The problem is not going to go away for Romney or the Republicans.

(18,964 posts)Why?
Because Harry Reid isn't stupid. He's accustomed to playing "three-dimensional-chess" with Mitch McConnel (even when chinless Mitch holds the advantage of filabuster) and he also knows how to manage the news cycles....
He wouldn't expose himself to the abuse he's getting in the press, and likewise he wouldn't take a chance of giving Rmoney a cheap victory by being proven wrong or by being proven to be just a "gossip".
He's holding something in reserve.
If I (you) are wrong...then it's the most bone-headed move ever.....but I don't think they do "bone-headed" at this level of politics...at least on our side of the aisle.

(36,444 posts)Here's just a taste, it's a very good read:
So, while Romney's taxes might seem like a trivial issue in the dog days of summer, this topic is real and will influence the election. Controversies without a resolution remain just that, a controversy. The media will continue to push for answers on Romney's taxes, and the Obama campaign (and their super PAC supporters) will make sure it remains a big part of the conversation. But, beyond the talking points and politics, Romney continues to send a loud message to voters -- he'll do what is politically expedient at the time, with little concern for transparency. As the economy remains the #1 issue on voter's minds, this election should be Romney's to lose -- and that makes it all the scarier to hypothesize what he is hiding.

(7,403 posts)Had the Republicans not selected Sharron Angle to run against Reid in 2010 then Reid would probably have lost and no longer be able to command the spotlight.
Look for something significant to surface about 48 hours prior to the start of the Republican convention that will set a negative tone. In this election cycle an October surprise may be too late.

(31,706 posts)If there's any "rope-a-dope" going on here, it's by Rmoney's inept team. There's many ways they could have slapped Reid down but they haven't. I'm sure Harry's got some reliable info (and again, this is an allegation, Reid never said he saw or knew, just others do) as smarmy Willard has made a lot of enemies along the way and there are surely a select number who would love to drop a dime on him.
Reid's tactic has been well played so far...putting a question to an existing question. It wasn't Reid who started the tax issue...it's always been Mitten's glass jaw...he just up the ante and threw a punch that team rmoney still haven't countered. The longer they wait, the more it reinforces a growing meme that Willard is a tax dodge or cheat. While the corporate media doesn't report it...this issue is really sticking in a lot of people's craw. The more the focus is on Willard's wealth the more his negatives rise.

(12,977 posts)I tried connecting the dots the other day in a thread that was already dropping:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=1093977
The short version is that since Romney hasn't held a paying job since 2002, much of his income over the last 10 years has probably been from the agreement he worked out with his former Bain partners for them to buy back his ownership of the company. If his ownership shares had been placed in that monster IRA at a nominally low value, there would be no taxes as long as the money remains in the IRA.
This would also explain why it took three years (from 1999 to 2002) for him to negotiate the terms of his departure from Bain -- and why he wasn't able to do anything to make his taxes look better when he started trying to run for president in 2007. He got locked into a very complex deal, couldn't change its terms, and can only conceal and stonewall.

(17,600 posts)The longer people talk about it - even if they're criticizing Reid - the better for Dems, because it spotlights Romney's wealth, secretiveness, and overall uncertainty over who this guy really is, except that he sure as hell isn't one of us.
It'll be great if Reid has more. But even if he's bluffing, it's GREAT strategy.

This is a modern day political [ii]Perils of Pauline. Now everybody is waiting expectantly for the next bit to come out, and nobody is listening to Romney's message. Every time something gets mentioned, even FauX has to switch direction and cover it.
Meanwhile, President Obama is still quite above the fray, so to speak, and can concentrate on delivering his message while the R's are playing defense against last week's news.
It's the best Democratic campaign we've seen since Clinton.

(35,015 posts)Look - Romney hasn't released his tax returns, and we all think it's because he hasn't paid any taxes. There's more going on though; such as why Romney has millions in an IRA when it's not legally possible, how he went about stashing $$ overseas, and his Marriott dealings. I think we may all be shocked by what we find out.

(57,936 posts)about it. No income tax. Property taxes? Sales taxes? Capital gains taxes? Maybe.
After all, we know that Romney took a paper loss on his La Jolla property and sought property tax relief based on that claimed loss.
