Florida turnout nears 1.4 million; GOP widens lead in early voting

Nearly 1.4 million Floridians have already voted in next Tuesday's primary.

The latest figures show turnout is at 10.6 percent with six full days of voting to go. (Turnout for the last mid-term primary in 2014 was 17.6 percent).

Republicans have strong leads over Democrats in both voting by mail and in early voting. Statewide, Republicans account for 47 percent of all votes, and Democrats 42 percent.

Across the state, county election supervisors like seeing so many people casting their ballots early. It will be even more of a factor in the November general election, when the ballot will be much longer and the turnout will be much higher.

Primary turnout is picking up steam in Broward, the state's most heavily-Democratic county. The three counties with the highest early voting counts through Wednesday are Miami-Dade, Broward and Duval.

The three counties with the highest mail ballot counts are Miami-Dade, Pinellas and Hillsborough.

determination of early voting except of the total number may indicate larger turnout, but not always

Pinellas and Hillsborough would change dramatically if the young people would actually vote. We have a lot of older people in our area but the service industry is held up by the youth, overall.

democrats typically lead in early voting because most of them have jobs and might not be able to easily vote on election day. GOP crowd skews older and has more retirees who can get out & vote on election day.

Just can't believe that the repugs can get that many people to defend them.

I have a theory that they are running some sort of scheme using non voters' names.

Too weird?

Not just in FL.

The average is literally 4 pieces of mail every day supporting Republican candidates. I know it is true because I visit her house and those flyers are on her table along with the rest of the mail. And it jives with 2016 when my Republican sister was living with me and likewise she was bombarded with flyers and phone calls and door to door visits literally every day.

I am a registered Democrat. So far this cycle I have received one phone call from Donna Shalala and a few flyers, also from the Shalala campaign. She is running for the open seat in FL-27.

I am actually happy to report that I have received some contact, because in prior cycles it has been zero at this point and often next to nothing through the general election itself.

When I lived in Las Vegas it was reverse. The Democratic operation fortified by Harry Reid dominated any similar efforts from Republicans. I got all the flyers, calls and visits, even when I lived in Henderson and had only recently changed my registration to that address. The operation was on the ball and picked it up immediately. But here in Florida -- or at least in suburban Miami -- I have to say it is no contest the other way. I read articles in 2016 saying that the GOP was emphasizing Dade County because their research revealed it was an underperforming area.

Who knows how many times his name and address have been sold and sold and sold again. He must be on hundreds of mailing lists. And then there are the dozens of spam emails he weeds through every single day.

Florida has an older population than most states. Most older people vote Republican. In 2016, the majority of voters over 45 cast their ballots for Trump.

Florida governor race exit poll between Crist and Scott...(Note: click link from "County Results" to "Exit Poll"...for some reason won't link directly to exit poll)

http://www.cnn.com/election/2014/results/state/FL/governor/

56% of voters were aged 50 and up. Crist won all the younger brackets and barely lost the 40-49 category by 1 point, 48-47.

However, the older voters aged 65 and up were 25% of the electorate and they pushed Scott over the top, favoring him 56-40.

***

Young voters don't show up in midterms and Democratic-leaning single women don't show up. That's why the female percentage of the electorate always plunges by 2 full percent from presidential year to midterms. It absolutely ruins us. Note that only 51% of the voters were female in that 2014 exit poll compared to 53% in 2016:

https://www.cnn.com/election/2016/results/exit-polls/florida/president

And it is always that way -- state after state, for as long as I've been following this, which dates to 1992. Republican women vote dependably in midterms but Democratic women do not.

we were allotted 9 days for early voting. Population is just shy of 700,000 yet only one cowtown has two locations for early voting. The times are from 10:00 am to 6 pm which seems to hinder working people. Yes voting by mail is a viable option but I haven't checked the stats on it, yet.

Anyway in the two location Cowtown, one polling spot is at a black community center while the other is at an annexed courthouse. You can breeze right into the Community Center yet the Courthouse features a line that extends into the hot sun AND requires security clearance for entering. Pretty much a snapshot of this red county.

Lower Alabama. (They got cheated out of some of their beach front property!)

Husband and I mailed in our absentee ballots last week. This part of FL is fire engine red but our Rep is that weasel, Matt Gaetz. So we just wanted to get our votes in early even though we know we’re out numbered. When tRump’s house of cards falls in, I hope Gaetz gets taken down with him. Gaetz has cozied up to tRump from his first day in office, envisioning a special place in tRump’s circle. With any luck, that special place will be one of tRump’s circles in hell.

Although this link is to the early voting in the General Election in 2104, it does show that Democrats are actually doing much better this year than 4 years ago.

FLORIDA: Republican Gov. Rick Scott faces a tough re-election challenge from Democrat Charlie Crist, himself a former Republican governor who switched parties to run for his old job. GOP voters account for 48.3 percent of the 535,000 ballots already cast, with registered Democrats comprising 34.5 percent.

Her campaign called me on my cell phone. I was happy to get the call but later I realized that number is not linked to my voter registration at all. I've never received an elections-related call on that number previously. But it is linked to my University of Miami football and basketball season ticket accounts. So I have to guess Shalala toted it with her.

I hope that is legal.

In 2016 I received only one Democratic call and it was on my land line.
