Russian Interference: Tech Giants Gather for Secret Meeting on Protecting Midterms
Jon Nazca / Reuters

Officials from as many as a dozen top tech companies, including Facebook and Twitter, are holding a secret meeting Friday to hammer out a joint approach to protecting the upcoming midterm U.S. congressional elections. An email seen by BuzzFeed News indicates the meeting—which will also be attended by Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat—will take place at Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco. The meeting will have each company present the work they’ve been doing to counter information operations and discuss the problems they each face. It may become a regular appointment. Following intense criticism of how they handled the 2016 presidential election, tech and social-media companies are under pressure to eliminate foreign intelligence and affiliated operations from their platforms for elections this fall.

They know that is to their benefit and will do everything to stop any attempt to expose and destroy it. The Republican Party is a criminal enterprise that will stop at nothing to crush anyone who opposes them. Look at the record, Nixon was forced to resign, his Vice President, Agnew was a convicted crook and resigned and his gang of gangsters went to jail. Twenty four of Reagans top officials were indicted and many sent to prison; Reagan should have been impeached and sent to Leavenworth along with North, who disgraced the Marine Corp. North is the Republican poster boy and now the head of the NRA. After the Democrats cleaned up after these traitors, along comes Bush and his neo-con henchmen who lied us into a war in Iraq. Rather than being held accountable for over 5,000 of our soldier's deaths and ten of thousands maimed for life, they are having resurgence in the Trump administration with even the notorious Bolton again at the controls. These are the people who said that after a quick victory and control of Iran's oil they would launch an invasion of Iran. Bolton is busy working on this cherished project under the authority of a treasonous bastard who conspired with are arch enemy to win the election. It make this dump old jerk wonder if the people will ever wake up or are we doomed to suffer these bastards who are put in office with right wing propaganda that the that their useful idiots feast on like swine. The only thing that they read, if they are indeed able, are the supermarket pulp such as the likes of the Inquirer.

The president and the Republican Party lie daily.
So does rightwing propaganda media.
What are they going to do about those lies? Compared to them the Russians are a drop in the bucket.

Kellyanne Conway’s lies have a bigger effect than he Russians.

These companies are stepping up and doing what a "normal" President of the United States would be doing. We need the FCC to take an interest in the disinformation generators.

is also amplified by MAGAts in the US - Russian sends out their army of bots at 2/3 AM Eastern Time, or 11pm/midnight Pacific Time...

They get their favored talking points trending over the next few hours - US East Coast wakes up at 6/7AM and gets ready for work and voila, the Russian favored talking points are trending on Twitter, Facebook, etc and then get amplified by those waking MAGAts in the morning.

Social media has been purged and is probably not going to be used by the Russians this time, but the vote is not safe, they will try to hack machines this time in an massive effort. If they can’t switch votes they’ll try to interrupt the election and cast doubt on results.

And while the Russians are trying to hack votes, crooked Republicans in charge of the voting systems are just as likely to manipulate votes. I do not trust the Republican officials in states like Georgia one iota, which reminds me of something I’ve thought about quite a bit since 2016. The conventional thought seems to be that the exit polls were just way off in some of the key states Clinton lost. It’s possible that some of those votes were tampered with, thus throwing off the exit polls just enough to make people believe that they were just wrong. I know—sounds like a conspiracy theory, but so many things were just wrong with the 2016 election. It reminds me far too much of the Diebold mess in Ohio in 2004 that gave George Bush the win there, most likely illegally, especially since the Diebold CEO promised to deliver Ohio for Bush. Current voting machines are just as hackable now as then, and far too many states do not have machines with a paper trail.

When you vilify your opponent this much, you can justify anything to win. That's where we are, the Right in this country has made Dems the enemy of the country to their voters. When you have an enemy you can justify cheating, lyhing, stealing, and all other sorts of wrongs.

But knowing these giant corporations are ruled by the love of money, I'm not expecting anything positive to come of any joint meeting of the group of them. Explain again why they would want to cut back on clicks on their sites and thus advertising dollars just to have what is on their sites be some extremely low percentage point more truthful when the internet is full of bull shit anyway.
