Democrats file "emergency" amendment to block Betsy DeVos from arming teachers

Trump’s education secretary is looking to use a legal loophole to allow federal funds to buy guns for teachers
SHIRA TARLO AUGUST 23, 2018 6:33PM (UTC)

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is reportedly looking to use a legal loophole to allow federal funds to buy guns for teachers — and Democrats appear determined to stop her.

The New York Times reports that the Department of Education is considering using the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Program to circumvent laws that prohibit the use of federal funding to purchase firearms for teachers. The SSAE grants — which are intended to fund the poorest school districts in the country, and calls for school districts to use the money to provide a well-rounded education and improve digital literacy and school conditions — would instead be given to states or districts to use that money toward firearms and firearms training, the outlet said.

n response to the Times report, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said he is introducing a "last minute emergency" amendment on Thursday to block the Education Department's funding bill.

The language in the bill requires the schools to purchase firearms from Blackwater, right? I can assure you this is just a way to funnel money to one of Prince's buddies because it doesn't take five minutes of discussing the issue to find that more than 80% of teachers don't want guns anywhere near the classroom.

He said she was at her psychological evaluation. I asked what that was.

He said she has been one of the armed teachers at her school for the last 10 years or so and every year she has to go through a psychological evaluation.

I did an inservice at a rural school district a couple years ago. When I got out of the car the first thing I saw was a huge billboarde that said "Warning: The teachers and staff of this school are armed and will use whatever force is necessary to protect our children." That was before all this school shooting publicity so it shocked me.

Arming teachers has been going on at some school districts for many years.
