GOP Sen. John McCain's (Ariz.) family announced on Friday that the senator has chosen to discontinue medical treatment, more than a year after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
"In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment," McCain's family said in a statement released by his office.
"Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from Johns many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. God bless and thank you all," they added.
McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer more than a year ago in July 2017 and has been absent from Washington since late last year as he's received treatment in Arizona.

(29,204 posts)I'm not a McCain fan by any means... but he is owed this much dignity in death.

(10,885 posts)he's one person for whom this is happy news. He should be thanking McCain for taking a bit of the heat off with the expected news coverage, and for the opportunity for a "yes" Kavanaugh vote.

(202 posts)I don't think he will make it that long. But the headlines have to be giving him chuckles.

(41,963 posts)The two acts, defending President Obama to the woman who called him an Arab and that thumbs down vote, bought a lot of respect from me.
May he cross easy.

(17,435 posts)But the very two things that you mention, as well as his prisoner of war experience, garner a great deal of respect from me. He is 100X braver than I could ever be. I too, hopes that he passes as comfortably as possible.

(5,324 posts)he saved my medical care and spoke out frequently against a monster. So, all in all, a passing grade.
Best wishes to his family.

(50,273 posts)I disagree with him about 75% of the time, but in the end he served with dignity and didn't go into public service as a way to pad his pockets like so many of the GOP today.

(13,795 posts)he is an perfect example of a hero. He fought in the Vietnam war, unlike Trump. He showed his dignity often, ie: shut down the insults on Obama. He stood toe to toe against Trump on many occasions. All in all, Senator McCain is a good man and not as evil as others in the GOP Party and the fool in the White House. I would hope he can spend his last days in peace and with his family.

(21,716 posts)I don't think the family would announce this if it wasn't the last days. Didn't agree with him on much, but he was an honorable man
