On McCain's deathbed, try for some common decency, DUers, for what it says about us...

Common decency isn't as common as one would hope, even on DU.

Let the man pass in peace, let his family and friends grieve -- and for gods' sake, let his body at least cool.

We can be better than this.

If you followed senate hearings and floor fights, he was a warrior in the front line. I did not always agree with him, but when the chips were down, he was a voice of reason. The one thing that he did that greatly disappointed me was choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate. That choice was actually made for him by the RNC. His stepping up against Muslim hatred when he ran against Barack Obama was awesome and he came under fire from his base for doing that. He was a voice of reason and proponent of bipartisan bills, which also said a lot for him. Give the man credit for what he got right.

I consider myself pretty far left, and though I abhor many of the things McCain has done, particularly imposing Sarah Palin on us—and he often sold out, even by his own standards, I think. But I don’t believe he is completely without merit. He would have been a better president (sans Sarah) than Bush was.
He certainly deserves empathy and I find myself even feeling a bit sad for him and his family. He was, at least, of a generation of politicians who would work across the isle on occasion for the sake of the country.
I fear we may never see that again, and his imminent passing feels symbolic of that.

Sure, some folks were financially ruined in the collapse of the savings and loan industry, just to name one episode of John McCain's long political career. But is that any reason to be upset now that the author of your misery is dying in the bosom of his family, peaceful and comfortable, with his final care being paid for by our tax dollars while his heirs tote up their respective shares of his estate?

service in government was a tragedy though. We can say with some confidence that his principles were often strong enough for him to voice concerns and rarely strong enough for him to vote along them. He did seem like a man with a conscience, and perhaps a troubled one. When push came to shove he defended Obama against some over the line nastiness, and he occasionally spoke truth to Trump's Presidency.

John McCain can pretty much kiss my ass and so can the entire GOP. They have fostered a climate of hate and corruption in the United States and the world for decades now, and I will not waste a single moment pretending to care about his passing or the passing of any of the other degenerates that have supported and built this evil party.

If that makes me an asshole so be it. I'd rather be an authentic asshole who never compromises on my principles or isn't true to my feelings than a phony asshole who pretends to feel something he doesn't. I feel no compassion for him or any other member of his fascist, degenerate party and the sooner they go extinct the better off the entire planet will be.

Good riddance John McCain.

I have great respect for the John McCain, who as a POW refused an early release. The North Vietnamese offered him an early release to score propaganda points because of his father's position. He refused and suffered greatly for that decision. But, John McCain the Republican politician I have no respect for. That John McCain has done much harm in my opinion and will be glad he is no longer in the Senate.

He risked his life for our country countless times. He had cojones in uniform, but too infrequently in the Senate. After he passes, we will muster rainbow sideboys (if you think this is funny look it up) and honor him by piping him over the side. Top to bottom, McCain has great publicists who blows smoke up our collective asses. I'm not dancing on his grave, but I am not going to pretend for decencies sake either. We're supposedly all adults here, why do we have be nice and when we aren't, we are automatically linked to the deplorables? People are complicated and being scolded about not mourning properly doesn't help.
Blessed Be
===

There’s a distance between the two men that belies their shared experience in North Vietnam — call it an honor gap. Like many American POWs, McCain broke down under torture and offered a “confession” to his North Vietnamese captors. Dramesi, in contrast, attempted two daring escapes. For the second he was brutalized for a month with daily torture sessions that nearly killed him. His partner in the escape, Lt. Col. Ed Atterberry, didn’t survive the mistreatment. But Dramesi never said a disloyal word, and for his heroism was awarded two Air Force Crosses, one of the service’s highest distinctions. McCain would later hail him as “one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met.”

On the grounds between the two brick colleges, the chitchat between the scion of four-star admirals and the son of a prizefighter turns to their academic travels; both colleges sponsor a trip abroad for young officers to network with military and political leaders in a distant corner of the globe.

“I’m going to the Middle East,” Dramesi says. “Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran.”

“Why are you going to the Middle East?” McCain asks, dismissively.

“It’s a place we’re probably going to have some problems,” Dramesi says.

“Why? Where are you going to, John?”

“Oh, I’m going to Rio.”

“What the hell are you going to Rio for?”

McCain, a married father of three, shrugs.

“I got a better chance of getting laid.”

Dramesi, who went on to serve as chief war planner for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and commander of a wing of the Strategic Air Command, was not surprised. “McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man,” Dramesi says today. “But he’s still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in.”

We'll all meet the end. Sooner or later. Some of us get the time to reflect on what we we've left this world. What we were, who we were, what we fought for, and how we lived. Some of us die suddenly without that chance. Death is all of our destiny. NOW is the time to fight for what you believe in. What will the world, the people we've met, the people we've touched say about us? This isn't a rehearsal. This is our life. John had a platform to shape policy. What he did with it, is what he did. Maybe he'll have regrets. Our own regrets are what should matter to us.

John McCain behaved well as a POW, by many (more than half, depending) accounts.

John Wayne Gacy was, for 89% of his life, an exemplary person, looking at all the evidence. He only strayed a little.

Pol Pot was educated in the best schools, and became a teacher.

Hitler treated his dog well, by all accounts.

And all of them behaved badly at many, many other times, but, if common decency means speak no ill of this or that person, there you go: that’s what you’re asking for.

He was one of the main characters in a sad era of American politics. I never bought his maverick act or his "decent' act. When push came to shove he was an arrogant war monger who never really bucked his party or the status quo. he was anti Trump because he was jealous of him getting elected when he couldn't. Whenever I think of the million or so dead from Iraq I think of him. He is right up there with Henry Kissinger as a war criminal in my mind. He always was allied with the hateful right wing bigots and his whole 2008 campaign was mostly about racism. The fact that he stayed away from racism, himself, doesn't change the fact that he laid down with the dogs. Only in America would experience bombing people and being a POW count for qualifications for the Office of President.
Having said that, it s pointless to flog him in the militarily brainwashed American mind. We need to let it go amd move on.

Visited one of them last night. It was heartbreaking to see life ebbing from her, but seeing her smile when I walked in the door took some of that sting away.

The other one lives hundreds of miles away. I wish I could afford to be at his bedside and offer support to his wife of 55 years. But I’ve got this pesky thing called a job, which I need to keep. I have fought for rights for all living creatures for well over 60 years. I worked a full time job and put just as many hours into the issues I fought for. I recognized the injustices and evils in the world that motivated me, but I did not embrace hate along the way. Hate does not result in victory. Recognizing evil and working to neutralize it kept me focused on the good and energized my efforts. The people I worked along side in the fight for a better world were also people who focused on the job at hand. Those who took time to hate, took their eye off the prize and were not as effective in the battle. You must acknowledge the good you find in people, not just the bad, because there is both in most people. Know what you are fighting for and focus less on who you are fighting against. Save your energy for the fight. Don't waste it on hate.

Few Americans realize the full implications of being born into a high level military family. His bio reveals both his father and grandfather were four star Admirals. It's a level akin to the military career of President Eisenhower, or at least they traveled in similar lofty circles. I became aware of this after reading Jean Edward Smith's biography of Eisenhower.

We may not agree with Senator McCain on everything, or most things, he didn't compromise in the middle much, but his generation and all military families really, made America great. Conservative in the 1950s meant opposing Communist Russia. How far the Republican Party has fallen.

Because he sang like a canary and gave them any information they asked. And they gave him special treatment because he was son of an Admiral. He did not want to be seen as leaving VC prison at head of line because that would have ruined his political ambitions to be known as a war hero.

But that is not my main reason for disliking McCain. ANyone who is captured is likely to spill beans just to survive.

My main reason I do not like McCain is that he never met a war he did not like. He aggressively supports every war. He was for Iraq war 1, Iraq war 2, Afghanistan war, Syria war, and would be for starting Iran war.

And his injuries were caused by the fighter plane crash which caused his capture. McCain was a bad pilot because he crashed more planes than any of his classmates during training. Post your "McCain was a sell-out songbird" bullshit on FR, or other appropriate RWNJ sites. I'm sure you'll find a warm welcome among the RWers who once pointed to McCain as their in-house military hero - until Spanky "Bone-Spurs" McShithole told them to trash him.

If one chooses to disrespect John McCain, I can see good reasons. Unfortunately hateful, malignant Republicans have brought us to that point.

It occurs to me that we Democrats judge ourselves too harshly, too often. I would love to see us give ourselves a break. We get enough garbage from "conservatives." We can refrain from dumping on ourselves if we choose. And who are we fooling? The pukes will not appreciate any example we set, ever.

To any fellow Democrat who sees fit to disrespect Kohn McCain, go for it.

When you see someone fighting for their life. It is not the time to air your petty grieviences.

John McCain is a War Hero. He deserves our honor. He has voted his conscience all his years in the Senate.

It choked me up watching Joe Biden present him with the Godl Medal. Different parties, long time friends. Sure beats the treacherous Lindsey Graham.

God bless John and his family. But he is still with us.

He could have used her wacko comments to spread even more hate, use it to his advantage, but he didn't. How different from Trump. I may not have always agreed with McCain's politics, but I respected his service, unlike Cadet Bone Spurs Trump. I'm so glad President Obama will be speaking at McCain's service, when the time comes, instead of Trump. I hope the news networks spend a lot of time covering every minute of the service, Trump will hate that.

I also agree we need to get tougher in the political arena. But giving the middle finger to a dying man is a wasted act of hatred. It gains us nothing and in fact makes us no better than the worse of the RW fanatics. This is one of those times where if you have nothing good to say then shut up.

Given his service to the country, go ahead and name a naval base or a bridge after him... or something.

Sat Aug 25, 2018, 02:21 AM

This was nearly 20 years ago. He was obsessed with it for years, trying to attach the legislation to totally unrelated bills in the late hours of one senate day after another. Harry Reid was always waiting in the darkness to object. McCain was frequently stunned that Reid was still on the premises, since he had planned carefully to do it when Reid was gone.

I was a full time Las Vegas sports bettor at that point so I despised John McCain.

I held onto most of that until last year and the health care vote, which saved the day and perhaps the life for several members of my extended family.

Now I view him about as favorably as possible, for a Republican in this era.

I had a good friend die of inoperable brain cancer. He went blind in the months prior to his passing and was wheelchair bound because his equilibrium was shot not to mention the terrible headaches and other pain that went with it. Brain cancer is not a good way to go but then again this is cancer.

I've been pissed off at NcCain several times over the years especially when he put the Wasilla Hillbilly on the ticket, but I never hated the guy and I won't start now.

I can only imagine the hell that his family is going through right now and hopefully they find some comfort and peace through all of this.

He said no to the ignoramuses and stated that Obama was a honorable man and citizen while Trump along every other Republican either echoed Trump or remained silent to get the racist white supremist vote. Unlike Cadet Bone Spurs, he served honorably under extreme cruel tests of his patriotism. While I don't agree with some of his stances, I believe that he provided fair assessment to the opposition. Republicans are displaying their hate filled souls as usual. Unfortunately, they have become a major threat to our nation and are destroying the very base of our democracy: Out of many one

The motto chosen by the founders of the Republic were acutely aware that while we may have differences we must respect those differences and never allow them to destroy the foundation upon which the nation was founded.

AND be critical of the deceased? I respect him as a fellow human being and feel sorry for his family. My feelings about McCain, politically, are quite all over the map and I am quite critical of the adulatory, fawning praise he is getting (though I pretty much expected it) in the media. He occasionally certainly did some praiseworthy things throughout his life and career in the Senate but his actions over the past few years frequently seemed contradictory to his words and the fawning caricature of him created by the media.
