Common decency isn't as common as one would hope, even on DU.
Let the man pass in peace, let his family and friends grieve -- and for gods' sake, let his body at least cool.
We can be better than this.

The one thing that he did that greatly disappointed me was choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate. That choice was actually made for him by the RNC. His stepping up against Muslim hatred when he ran against Barack Obama was awesome and he came under fire from his base for doing that. He certainly deserves empathy and I find myself even feeling a bit sad for him and his family. He was, at least, of a generation of politicians who would work across the isle on occasion for the sake of the country.

Some of us die suddenly without that chance. Death is all of our destiny. NOW is the time to fight for what you believe in. What will the world, the people we've met, the people we've touched say about us? This isn't a rehearsal. This is our life. John had a platform to shape policy. What he did with it, is what he did. When push came to shove he was an arrogant war monger who never really bucked his party or the status quo. he was anti Trump because he was jealous of him getting elected when he couldn't. Whenever I think of the million or so dead from Iraq I think of him. He is right up there with Henry Kissinger as a war criminal in my mind. He always was allied with the hateful right wing bigots and his whole 2008 campaign was mostly about racism. The fact that he stayed away from racism, himself, doesn't change the fact that he laid down with the dogs. I recognized the injustices and evils in the world that motivated me, but I did not embrace hate along the way. Hate does not result in victory. Recognizing evil and working to neutralize it kept me focused on the good and energized my efforts. The people I worked along side in the fight for a better world were also people who focused on the job at hand. Those who took time to hate, took their eye off the prize and were not as effective in the battle. You must acknowledge the good you find in people, not just the bad, because there is both in most people. Know what you are fighting for and focus less on who you are fighting against. Save your energy for the fight. Don't waste it on hate.

It's a level akin to the military career of President Eisenhower, or at least they traveled in similar lofty circles. I became aware of this after reading Jean Edward Smith's biography of Eisenhower.
We may not agree with Senator McCain on everything, or most things, he didn't compromise in the middle much, but his generation and all military families really, made America great. Conservative in the 1950s meant opposing Communist Russia. How far the Republican Party has fallen.

Because he sang like a canary and gave them any information they asked. And they gave him special treatment because he was son of an Admiral. He did not want to be seen as leaving VC prison at head of line because that would have ruined his political ambitions to be known as a war hero.
But that is not my main reason for disliking McCain. ANyone who is captured is likely to spill beans just to survive.
My main reason I do not like McCain is that he never met a war he did not like. He aggressively supports every war. He was for Iraq war 1, Iraq war 2, Afghanistan war, Syria war, and would be for starting Iran war.

I bet McCain would never have survived that charge by his opponent in senate run.
And his injuries were caused by the fighter plane crash which caused his capture. McCain was a bad pilot because he crashed more planes than any of his classmates during training. Why would the VC torture him when he was gladly singing like a canary and giving them anything they asked. VC even gave him a nick name-Songbird. VC was well aware he was son of a US Admiral.

If one chooses to disrespect John McCain, I can see good reasons. Unfortunately hateful, malignant Republicans have brought us to that point.
It occurs to me that we Democrats judge ourselves too harshly, too often. I would love to see us give ourselves a break. We get enough garbage from "conservatives." We can refrain from dumping on ourselves if we choose. And who are we fooling? The pukes will not appreciate any example we set, ever.
To any fellow Democrat who sees fit to disrespect Kohn McCain, go for it.

John McCain is a War Hero. He deserves our honor. He has voted his conscience all his years in the Senate.
It choked me up watching Joe Biden present him with the Godl Medal. Different parties, long time friends. Sure beats the treacherous Lindsey Graham.
God bless John and his family. But he is still with us.

(561 posts)He could have used her wacko comments to spread even more hate, use it to his advantage, but he didn't. How different from Trump. I may not have always agreed with McCain's politics, but I respected his service, unlike Cadet Bone Spurs Trump. I'm so glad President Obama will be speaking at McCain's service, when the time comes, instead of Trump. I hope the news networks spend a lot of time covering every minute of the service, Trump will hate that.

(23,668 posts)I also agree we need to get tougher in the political arena. But giving the middle finger to a dying man is a wasted act of hatred. It gains us nothing and in fact makes us no better than the worse of the RW fanatics. This is one of those times where if you have nothing good to say then shut up.

(23,761 posts)if we on the left don't get like the fanatical RW'ers we will continue to lose...the one thing I admire about the repukes is their single determination to win....short of breaking the law, I don't care what we do to win...also, do you think for a minute a repuke would shed a tear over Obama,Kerfry, Clinton et al? Guess again, fuck 'em I don't give a shit out their little egos and feelings.

Given his service to the country, go ahead and name a naval base or a bridge after him... or something.

(14,565 posts)This was nearly 20 years ago. He was obsessed with it for years, trying to attach the legislation to totally unrelated bills in the late hours of one senate day after another. Harry Reid was always waiting in the darkness to object. McCain was frequently stunned that Reid was still on the premises, since he had planned carefully to do it when Reid was gone.
I was a full time Las Vegas sports bettor at that point so I despised John McCain.
I held onto most of that until last year and the health care vote, which saved the day and perhaps the life for several members of my extended family.
Now I view him about as favorably as possible, for a Republican in this era.

(6,039 posts)I had a good friend die of inoperable brain cancer. He went blind in the months prior to his passing and was wheelchair bound because his equilibrium was shot not to mention the terrible headaches and other pain that went with it. Brain cancer is not a good way to go but then again this is cancer.
I've been pissed off at NcCain several times over the years especially when he put the Wasilla Hillbilly on the ticket, but I never hated the guy and I won't start now.
I can only imagine the hell that his family is going through right now and hopefully they find some comfort and peace through all of this.

(8,200 posts)He said no to the ignoramuses and stated that Obama was a honorable man and citizen while Trump along every other Republican either echoed Trump or remained silent to get the racist white supremist vote. Unlike Cadet Bone Spurs, he served honorably under extreme cruel tests of his patriotism. While I don't agree with some of his stances, I believe that he provided fair assessment to the opposition. Republicans are displaying their hate filled souls as usual. Unfortunately, they have become a major threat to our nation and are destroying the very base of our democracy: Out of many one
The motto chosen by the founders of the Republic were acutely aware that while we may have differences we must respect those differences and never allow them to destroy the foundation upon which the nation was founded.

(24,412 posts)AND be critical of the deceased? I respect him as a fellow human being and feel sorry for his family. My feelings about McCain, politically, are quite all over the map and I am quite critical of the adulatory, fawning praise he is getting (though I pretty much expected it) in the media. He occasionally certainly did some praiseworthy things throughout his life and career in the Senate but his actions over the past few years frequently seemed contradictory to his words and the fawning caricature of him created by the media.
