(13,870 posts)He knows hes going to get confirmed. The only way he could screw it up now would be to say something that would cause Trump to withdraw the nomination, so I dont see much of a story here.
But realistically, the only good spin for our side is that historically what a judge does before his SCOTUS nomination, and what he says during confirmation, does not necessarily lock in how he will act as a Supreme Court judge.
Dont forget that one of the greatesteat civil libertarians in the history of re Court - Hugo Black - was a former Senator from Alabama and a one-time member of the KKK.

(6,228 posts)I hope that this nomination shows those who say both parties are the same or HRC wasn't progressive enough (Bull shit), what fools they were November 2016. I wake up every day knowing how screwed we the people are.

(11,606 posts)There is no way he should be allowed within 1000 miles of the Supreme Court.
FakeNoose
(32,639 posts)He would have no problem using the Supreme Court to advance a certain political party's objectives. More than likely he would abuse the position to protect friends and sponsors. We know that by his own words and past actions.
Beyond that I don't know, but that's certainly enough to keep him SCOTUS off right there.

On August 26, all across the country, Americans will stand united in commitment to our freedom and our future to demand that the U.S. Senate stop Judge Brett Kavanaughs nomination for a lifelong appointment to the Supreme Court.
In Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump chose a nominee who not only has extremist, ultra-conservative legal views on a range of issues, but who has repeatedly argued that the Supreme Court should put the president above the law. Donald Trump is at the center of a criminal investigation, and he should not be allowed to pick his own judge and jury.
Kavanaugh would rule against reproductive freedom, health care, the environment, voting rights, workers rights, LGBTQ rights, and immigrant rights for generations.
Senators in all fifty states must listen to their constituents, do their jobs to uphold the will of the people, protect the soul of our country and Constitution, and block this nomination. United, we will fight to ensure Brett Kavanaugh never gets confirmed by the Senate. We will #StopKavanaugh. Join us.

(46,045 posts)Ask him that in the hearings. I think Kamala Harris is on Judiciary. IMHO, she can take over Al Franken's role as inquisitor.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)She's an extremely good inquisitor, far sharper that way than our Al ever was, though she might suffer backlash from the too-aggressive female syndrome. She never stumbles around like Al sometimes did, though. She knows exactly what her targets' vulnerabilities lie and how to use them against them.
I don't understand your suggestion that Kaine himself be questioned. But I don't think judiciary is among his various committee assignments. He studied economics and has his JD from Harvard and is Jesuit trained. That last training in deep reasoning and morals and ethics is impressive to me, though Pence's experience as a right-wing radio creep served him better during the VP debates.

(88 posts)Just as Kavenaugh will be despite all of the compelling reasons to deny him a lifetime seat on the highest court in the country.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Don't remember who was questioning, but he got so nervous at one point that he volunteered an incriminating statement to a question that wasn't asked. If Republicans don't hold congress, his career that should never have been is almost over.

Hortensis
(58,785 posts)in November. VA seems to be pretty solid, but holding this senate seat would be beyond crucial, so my best guess is the strategizers will only put him in front of cameras as it benefits his campaign. So far he's giving Kavanaugh the "respectful" consideration all nominees deserve, even when they don't.

(22,670 posts)No matter, Russians in congress will still push his nomination through with full force. Which is why someone smart needs to be identifying how to nullify the rigged 2016 election. That or we need to swamp the election booths in November and indict wherever indictments lead.

This whole BS about non-answers or answering some question that was not asked and the politicians moving on as if they had actually answered needs to stop.

(54,379 posts)"I have proof positive in his answers to two simple questions: Kananaugh is a right wing hack with a double standard and no integrity."
Kavanaugh just proved it right then and there: "yes, get him," if the President is a Democrat. "No, leave him alone," if the president is a Republican. Unfortunately, that is why no Republican would vote against him except as a grudge move (hey, Jeff Flake? Your fellow Arizonan, John McCain has a deathbed request he'd like to make of you.....).
I fear that anyone holding out hope for Corker, Collins or Murkowski is waiting for Godot.
