Helene, mother of 9-month-old Nathan, explains what their photo with President Obama means to her

A parent for Obama: Helene’s story

Helene, the mother of 9-month-old Nathan, explains what the above photo means to her.

“We will always have that photograph and that moment—it’ll be part of our family forever, and Nathan is definitely going to be a lifelong Obama supporter. My husband had never seen me look so happy and excited in his entire life. It was just an amazing feeling, an amazing moment. The thing you could really tell when he was holding the baby is that he’s a father. I said this to my husband immediately after. You can tell he’s a dad—he has a way with children. It was genuine and he really connects with kids.

“I want my son to have and believe in an America that doesn’t leave people behind. I don’t want my son to grow up in an America where the poor starve because of a lack of health care—it’s inconceivable to me that there could be an America where folks are left hungry or without adequate care.

“If Mitt Romney wins in November, he would try and dismantle health reform, and I worry about that for my son’s sake. I like that he can be covered by our family’s insurance until he’s 26, and that if he doesn’t have a job where he makes a ton of money he can still get affordable health care. And I don’t like trickle down economics: I believe that a strong middle class drives economic growth and America.”

The smile goes all the way up to his eyes and you can tell that he's focusing his attention on them. Yeah, it makes for a good photo op, but he treats kids like people, not props.

It's not that he's a father - he's a parent - big difference.

Fabulous - rec!

In spite of all the nasty stuff said about Pres O here, the name-calling and casting of aspersions on his character, he is a good man. I have no doubt in my mind on that point and never have. When his grandmother died the night before he was elected, it just broke my heart. There was an invisible embrace of him by Democrats that night that holds strong to this day. I may not agree with some of his policies and may remain steadfastly upset that Bush/Cheney weren't prosecuted, but when push comes to shove I have this guy's back.
