Only twice in my life have I received a handsigned personal letter from anyone in government. One of those was from an Army general at the direction of LBJ and the other was from Senator McCain. During the Bush campaign, Bush operatives in SC tried to start a rumor that McCain had a black love child because he has an adopted Indian daughter. I found the Rovian tactics disgusting and wrote McCain to tell him so. I told him I was a Democrat, that I hadn't very often agreed with him politically, but I felt that members of his party were treating him shamefully and exploiting race in a vicious and nasty way that needed to be addressed. I may have even invited him to switch parties. Anyway, he wrote back thanking me for my comments. He certainly did not have to do that. I wasn't in his party and did not live in his state.
Yeah, he made mistakes. But he was an American hero. And no matter his politics, he deserves respect for standing up to Trump (especially on the ACA). It made up for putting Sarah Palin on the ballot.
Godspeed, Senator McCain. Give 'em hell wherever you go!

(20,686 posts)government.
The thought of him being president scared the crap out of me, but right now, I'd take him over 45 in a hot second.
The viet nam war was wrong, it was a lie, and he really suffered for it, along with all the other soldiers, whether they "made it back" alive or not.
The question is, why would someone to suffered so much for his country sell it off to a gangster?

The answer - Do you want Sarah Palin one old man's heartbeat away from the White House?

(11 posts)Must have made his equivocal votes on health insurance and his unequivocal opposition to womens healthcare much more palatable. Me, I sent him letters opposing all of that and the Iraq war too, but never received a letter in return, cannot imagine why.

(28,979 posts)I was just surprised that he responded with a personal letter not a form response like most politicians.

(1,058 posts)and even though I made it clear that I was a Democrat, and disagreed with many of his positions and votes in the Senate, he was very friendly and personable.
He actually was interested why I disagreed with him and didn't take issue on my comments to him.

(7,286 posts)I was so disgusted with SC and the racist beat down, I crossed political lines in our closed primary. Registered GOP and voted for McCain.
I knew Bush was a turd.
I think McCain would have handled 9/11 much better. Might never have happened

(12,378 posts)McCain's response was the hug and announcement of his support of Bush.

(10,125 posts)Can't say I agreed with him much politically.
Unlike how many in the GOP present themselves, there was a human side to him. Whether it was standing up for Obama during that town hall or standing up for healthcare in the fairly recent vote to kill Obamacare or his military record, he wasn't all bad.
There are a bunch in the GOP I really don't care for but I'd never spit on John McCain when he's down like he is right now.

(2,971 posts)Below is a statement issued by Senator John McCain on President Trumps meeting with Vladimir Putin:
Todays press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trumps naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.
President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.
It is tempting to describe the press conference as a pathetic rout as an illustration of the perils of under-preparation and inexperience. But these were not the errant tweets of a novice politician. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putins regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of international treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world.
