McCain's passing is certainly a symbolic benchmark of the end of anything even approaching reason or sanity in the GOP. He was the last of a breed of compromisers in the GOP that could at least be worked with even if we disagreed with them.......... and we are left with nothing but paranoia and lunacy.

(17,136 posts)and I'm contributing to this one, too. From Ballotpedia:
https://ballotpedia.org/United_States_Senate_election_in_Arizona,_2018
This seat is rated as Toss-up by ratings outlets.[7] Although Arizona has been continuously represented by Republican senators since 1995, CNN listed this seat among 10 U.S. Senate seats it considered most likely to flip in 2018.[8]
Election updates
June 26, 2018: NBC News released the results of a poll it conducted alongside Marist College. The poll, which was conducted between June 17 and June 21, asked 839 registered voters who they would support in hypothetical matchups between Kyrsten Sinema (D) and three Republican candidates. The poll found that in a matchup against Martha McSally (R), 49 percent of voters would back Sinema while 38 percent would back McSally. In a matchup against Joe Arpaio (R), 57 percent of voters would back Sinema and 32 percent would back Arpaio. In a matchup against Kelli Ward (R), 48 percent would back Sinema while 38 percent would back Ward.

(297,655 posts)I do remember the name but not why anyone would dislike her.
She's the Dem against a trump doormat.. what's not to like?!

(53,061 posts)Martha McSally is and she will run a good campaign.

(297,655 posts)Kyrsten Sinema has a chance now?

(53,061 posts)But it has narrowed.
One question is how many Ward supporters will get demoralized and stay home. Mc Sally ran brutal ads against Ward.
There is also the strange comparison of KS being courageous about her bisexuality and McSally widely perceived as being in the closet.
Affection for McCain could help KS as McSally is percieved as not standing up to Trump.
If they are going to win they are going to have to spend big time.
We could pick up Senate seats in both AZ and Texas.

(297,655 posts)would help the repub. But, I guess they really don't like trump in AZ? Yay!
Wishing you the very Best of Luck in AZ and to in Texas.. for your States and our Democracy, grant!

(10,721 posts)Regardless, she's going to get quite a few votes. Republicans are absolutely nuts.
grantcart
(53,061 posts)She would have won without Arpaio and almost everybody in AZ thinks that the Arpaio pardon and candidacy was aimed to keep Ward off the ticket, and it probably made the difference
https://www.democraticunderground.com/10385152
The pardoning of Arpaio so that he could run for the Senate, split the "Nuttier than a fruitcake" vote and help McSally win the nomination was so transparently obvious that it is hard to believe that it would work, but it seems to have made the difference.
McSally Ward Arpaio
ABC 15/OH Predictive Insights 7/23 - 7/25 576 LV 4.1 35 27 15 McSally +8
Gravis 6/27 - 7/2 501 LV 4.4 36 27 24 McSally +9
Emerson 6/21 - 6/22 305 RV 5.9 32 19 18 McSally +13
NBC News/Marist 6/17 - 6/21 371 RV 6.7 30 28 21 McSally +2
McSally's campaign against Ward has been rather brutal.
My question is this: What do you hear from Ward supporters? Are they going to be too angry or disappointed to show up at the polls? Are there Trump/Ward supporters who are going to be upset at Trump helping McSally to stay home/
