(4,192 posts)and the like back when we all compared our scars and thought that was the worst part about getting the shots...you know, those nickel-sized rings on our upper arms. I can still see mine faintly on my left arm. But vaccines have been proven to work! If a small percentage of the population has negative reactions, that's tragic and shouldn't be ignored. But overwhelmingly vaccines have been a great benefit to our societies around the globe.

(14,732 posts)1) go swimming, 2) go to county fairs or anything else that had crowds. One of my best friend's older brother contracted polio. Fortunately it "only" affected one limb, but he's gone through life with a withered leg and a limp (and he was one of the 'lucky ones'). Most anti-vaxxers have never seen an Iron Lung. They ought to.

(90,793 posts)...for a young nurse. I was participating in a flu vaccination event, and the older nurse wielding the needle paused and called over a nursing student to have a look at my arm and hear an explanation of what she was looking at. Like the scars themselves, those who bear them and understand why are fading into history.
It really is too bad there is a generation that is woefully under-educated in science, public health, and related topics.

My parents were thrilled beyond words when polio vaccines were given.
Every time I see something this stupid, dangerous, and reckless, I think of this.

The photo is actually one of the best arguments/advertisements for vaccination I could think of.

They're also not old enough to know what polio was like prior to vaccines or measles or mumps.
Ignorance is not something to be celebrated, yet they look proud of their ignorance.

(9,035 posts)I'm sure you know that, but I am astounded at the number of people who actually think that prayer will fix or cure anything. How many times do they have to be proven wrong before they fucking get it?
Oh, I guess my faith wasn't strong enough. No, it's just that your faith is misplaced. Science is a helluva lot more reliable than belief.

(1,020 posts)When you replace Science with Belief. There is no replacement for Science, as it is the study of Nature. Nature exists and is the same for all of us; Beliefs have not been proven, and are subjective.
So their beliefs are dooming their children and families to all those things guarded against by the vaccines they're not taking. How thoughtful.
You ignore Reality at your own expense, because Reality isn't ignoring you.
