I was working for a couple of hours, and went to DU about 15 minutes ago. Saw that there was a shooting in FL with several dead. Turned the TV to CNN and then MSNBC. It's been non-stop McCain for 15 minutes and counting.
So I came to the conclusion, McCain dying is news. A Mass Shooting is just something that happens every day somewhere in the U.S., and less newsworthy.

but shootings wil usually not get as much coverage these days since its so "normal" in this country.

(22,431 posts)A death of a well-known person on a weekend, like McCain's, is ideal, because you can stretch the coverage to fill lots of empty air that usually happens on weekends. But when breaking news happens, such as a shooting, you don't necessarily have a lot of people you can rely on to report it out.

(872 posts)I must not have been looking at DU 4 hours ago when it happened. Perhaps it is less of a story now since it ended with a dead shooter. I turned it on at the bottom of hour, so I guess they covered it at the top, and then moved on to McCain.

(872 posts)Not sure what that means. Either less dead or more I guess.

(39,379 posts)A big section of the political class is mourning the end of an era, their era. A reminder of a time when Washington didnt suck so bad. Theyre mourning the end of their own time as well as McCain. Its taking up a lot of oxygen.

(38,958 posts)and that is at least in part some of the reason for the national divisiveness. There are a whole lot of ex-politicos that now serve as Talking Heads exploring each and every nuance of each and every horse race. Those folks don't come cheap and if they are on the payroll they need to be used for what they can produce which is keeping eyes glued to the Breathless 24/7 Breaking Infotainment Machine that is designed to be on just long enough for you to stay tuned during the ads for drugs you never knew you needed.

We have reached a truly terrible place. It is not shocking that a President lies or that people are shot at a gaming convention.
