The real explosives are in the 'CY '08 and '09 returns, which the McCain campaign never saw because they hadn't been filed yet. I suspect the campaign is very carefully calculating which would be worse, releasing something awful (however that awful may be defined) or not releasing, and hoping the issue will eventually go away.

It shouldn't go away until he does release them.

As long as he is hanging out there with "something to hide", Obama can take free shots at him and he really can't defend himself.
