Mitt has done the calculation. He'd rather not show them and let you think the worst that you can think of because what's actually in there is WORSE than you can think of.

where a candidate puts his foot down like this. Bottomline - there is something in there that he feels will doom his election.

There was probably nothing more than regular rich shitheel stuff in the returns that Grampy's people saw back in '08. The real explosives are in the 'CY '08 and '09 returns, which the McCain campaign never saw because they hadn't been filed yet. Massive refunds, no taxes paid, taking advantage of amnesty for money stashed in Switzerland and probably more beyond that. Release that to the public and he'd be deader than Dillinger. But he still may be forced into it.

hell no with his fingers crossed behind his back.

He can't release because they are too incriminating.

I suspect the campaign is very carefully calculating which would be worse, releasing something awful (however that awful may be defined) or not releasing, and hoping the issue will eventually go away.

It shouldn't go away until he does release them.

As long as he is hanging out there with "something to hide", Obama can take free shots at him and he really can't defend himself.
