'Unexploded' device floating in Puget Sound off Bainbridge Island (Really strange!)

The Coast Guard is responding to an 'unexploded' device, resembling a mine, drifting in Puget Sound between Brownsville Marina and Bainbridge Island.

The Coast Guard is responding to an 'unexploded' device, resembling a mine, drifting in Puget Sound between Brownsville Marina and Bainbridge Island.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman said the object was reported at about 2 p.m. The Coast Guard established a 1,500-yard safety zone around the ordnance, which was about 1,200 yards east of the marina and drifting south. Crews from the Coast Guard and state Department of Natural Resources were patrolling the area.

The Coast Guard established a 1,500-yard safety zone around the ordnance. Crews from the Coast Guard and state Department of Natural Resources patrolled the perimeter and kept boats from getting too close.

Around 5 p.m., two divers approached the device and started securing it with a rope. The Navy tells KING 5 more information about the device and its disposal should be available soon.

On the newscast I heard that this device has an amount of scum on it and could actually be an un-exploded WWII mine!

I've dredged near Norfolk and Mayport and I've seen all manner of munitions exposed and even hauled up or loosened which later washed ashore nearby.

They are currently towing it away. There is a substantial amount of marine life on the underside. They do not know if this is a training mine or a live one. Still waiting on a statement from the navy.
