Mitt Romney who has placed his business record at the centerpiece of his presidential campaign is now asking President Obama to stop discussing his tenure with Bain Capital.
<...>
The Obama campaign has turned Romneys business past into a campaign issue, noting that the the governor himself touts that experience as his main calling card for setting the country on the right track.
Until recently, Romney seemed to agree. Look, Im very proud of my experience at Bain Capital. I hope people understand that I was investing other peoples money for them and was compensated if we were highly successful, he told CNBCs Larry Kudlow on July 23. Thats the kind of record which Im pretty proud of.
Top surrogate and adviser John Sununu echoed this argument during a Romney campaign conference in May, saying, I think the Bain record as a whole is fair game, and what you have to do is do an honest evaluation.

This recent point by Krugman is appropriate:
And heres the thing: Romney is running for president entirely on the basis of his business success. In a better world he could be running on the basis of his successful health reform, but now hes condemning that very achievement. In a better world he could actually be running on the basis of some kind of coherent policy ideas, but instead hes offering nothing but a mix of tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the middle class so extreme that focus groups refuse to believe that this is his actual proposal.
Once the Bain record becomes a liability instead of a strength, theres nothing there.

(28,158 posts)From now on all Mitt is allowed to say is, "vote for me to get Obama out of office."
Their new campaign slogan is, "Mitt Romney for president. At least he's not Obama."

He'd probably look at Mitt and say, "Sorry, man, I can raise the dead, but I can't raise dead political campaigns."
