Teacher Attacked Pupil Over Pledge Refusal

A middle school teacher accused of assaulting a pupil who refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance has pleaded guilty and retired from teaching.

Karen Smith, 60, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of child abuse resulting in injury, reported the Denver Post.

An additional third degree assault charge was dropped by prosecutors as a condition of the plea agreement.

Smith will serve an 18-month deferred sentence, which means the guilty plea will be withdrawn if she serves the time of the sentence and is not charged with another criminal offense in that time.

...to stand for the daily pledge of allegiance. The teacher scolded him and sent him off to the principle's office. No other student stood up to the teacher or defended the other student...not even me. I feel so guilty that I did not do anything. It's one of my big regrets in life.
