Momentum gathering around some kind of US military action in Venezuela: Rubio, as well as some in DC bureaucracy openly discussing now. A friend with high-level DC contacts told me recently Im afraid theyre gonna do something crazy.

Marco Rubio says there is a very strong argument to be made for considering a military option in #Venezuela. Thats a terrible idea. https://www.infobae.com/america/venezuela/2018/08/30/marco-rubio-no-descarto-la-opcion-militar-de-eeuu-en-venezuela-las-circunstancias-han-cambiado/

WARNING. This is exactly what we have been waiting for from a cornered, corrupt #DonaldTrump. He will attempt to use irrationally focused military force against an imaginary enemy to keep power as his end is coming. It would be unlawful and corrupt. #ResistAtAllCosts

(1,058 posts)Venezuela is a shithole run by a despotic asshole and his corrupt minions, (sound familiar?) but this is a problem Venezuelans need to solve without any outside military intervention.
This kind of shit would unite the country and give that asshole Maduro, even more power.
When the fuck will we ever learn?

(32,023 posts)This isn't the 1970s anymore. The U.S. exports oil. It does not need oil from Venezuela.

(33,643 posts)I don't know where people are getting this idea (no offense) ... but it's not even close to true ...
We've gone from importing just over 50% to importing just under 30% last I checked, which was recently.

(32,023 posts)In the fourth quarter of 2017, the U.S. exported roughly 7 million barrels of petroleum per day. The largest markets for U.S. petroleum exports are Mexico and Canada, but the U.S. exports petroleum to 180 countries.
The recent increase in domestic oil production, especially since 2010, has had a significant impact on U.S. petroleum imports and exports. From 2005 to 2015, the United States reliance on petroleum imports fell from 60% to 25% of total consumption, while exports increased by over 300%. Since 2015, imports and exports have both increased slightly, although imports have been slightly lower since mid-2017. The Energy Information Administration projects that U.S. import reliance for oil will continue to fall over the coming decade.

U.S. NET OIL IMPORTS are projected to drop by nearly 60 percent next year compared to 2017, falling to their lowest levels since 1958, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said Tuesday in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook.
"That certainly is eye-popping," says Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
Net imports are expected to fall from an average of 3.7 million barrels per day last year to 2.4 million bpd this year and 1.6 million bpd next year "a pretty staggering number," he says.

So technically you are right but we are NOT dependent or need oil from Valenzuela. The idea we would invade for oil is ridiculous.

(33,643 posts)Exactly the sort that the Trump admin would make up ...
Anyways, meanwhile ... oil is a valuable, fungible commodity, do we not agree on that? It's basically CASH, just sitting there. Yeah?
To me, it's ridiculous to think that rapacious US-based (or even international ones with the power to leverage our military) interests would NOT attempt to requisition one of the biggest oil reserves on the planet REGARDLESS of the USA's INTERNAL NEED for this resource.
Your logic seems to be based on thinking all corporations that might have influence over our Military ... only care about the US petroleum supply ... but I really don't think that's the case.
The whole world needs oil, and Venezuela is a vastly-compromised society, sitting on trillions of dollars worth. Kinda like Iraq, only they're even EASIER pickings. They're just across the Gulf of Mexico, not half-way across the world. And they ain't even remotely armed like Saddam was ...
On top of THAT? US Gulf Coast Refineries are among the only ones in the world with the tech in place to convert Venezuelan Sour Crude ... into something actually useful.
Think about it ... and remember this is Trump we're talking about ... if military action DID happen ... what would you postulate WAS the reason? Terra-ists?
