White House Cites Executive Privilege to Withhold 100,000 Pages of Kavanaugh Records

Looks like Schumer got rolled and the Republicans cleaned his clock, again. Just a day or 2 earlier Schumer made a deal to give Republicans over a dozen lifetime judges, and now he gets this.

Shumer needs to go as minority leader. At this point, ANY of the other Dem senators could do a better job as minority leader

God I miss Harry Reid .....

White House Cites Executive Privilege to Withhold 100,000 Pages of Kavanaugh Records

WASHINGTON — The Trump White House, citing executive privilege, is withholding from the Senate more than 100,000 pages of records from Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh’s time as a lawyer in the administration of former President George W. Bush.

The decision, disclosed in a letter that a lawyer for Mr. Bush sent on Friday to Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, comes just days before the start of Judge Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings on Tuesday. It drew condemnation from Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader.

“We’re witnessing a Friday night document massacre,” Mr. Schumer wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “President Trump’s decision to step in at the last moment and hide 100k pages of Judge Kavanaugh’s records from the American public is not only unprecedented in the history of SCOTUS noms, it has all the makings of a cover up.”

-snip-

Senate Democrats said this was the first time that a sitting president has exerted executive privilege under the Presidential Records Act in order to prevent documents from going to Congress during a Supreme Court confirmation process. Mr. Schumer issued his angry tweets alleging a holiday weekend cover-up just minutes before the start of the funeral for his Senate colleague John McCain, which Mr. Schumer attended.

That when these docs are reviewed at a time when the Dems take over.....the hidden info can be used to impeach Kavanaugh.

Really think they'll impeach a Supreme Court Justice?

relating to HIS administration. What the hell makes Trump think he can assert it for another president two administrations ago? "Executive privilege" is a made up thing anyway. It's not in the constitution, there is no law creating it, and I don't know if it's been challenged in the courts. If Kavanaugh gets onto the SCOTUS, given his proclivity toward expanding the powers of the presidency, Trump could probably claim executive privilege for everything done in the Executive Branch.

The GOP is up to their usual dirty tricks. First McConnell steals Obama's SCOTUS appointment ("My proudest accomplishment," he said) and now they are withholding the documents that have been available every administration, Democratic and Republican. There must be something very bad in those documents.

Unfortunately, just like withholding Obama's appointment, withholding documents (well, those that relate to Republican appointments) will now have precedent. Of course, if it's a Democratic President who makes the SCOTUS appointment and the Dems try to withhold documents the Repugs will scream holy hell.

This is the reason why there's a desire to clean out the old guard from the Dem ranks.

I hope there is a wait and see, and there's still more to come, but, if Schumer's deal does not come through, I say he needs to respectfully bow out.

I swear, when I saw Lieberman at McCain's funeral I put it together. I said to myself, there were only two times that minorities had to fear in the past. The first, when there was strong tribalism coming from the Right, because minority issues were going to get battered. And the second was when Democratic and Republican Centrists were in full throttle unity, because minority issues were going to get battered.
