Nope, not satire from The Onion...
Residents in the Cedar Landing community have been working with Pender County and Surf City officials to get some enforcement over stop signs and speed limits.
Residents say they have used monitors to count thousands of cars that pass through weekly, but only 70 people live in the neighborhood.
They are now charging drivers five dollars to pass through Cedar Avenue. Not all people are happy, but most of them support the cause.

(25,586 posts)If so they can get stuffed. I drive a beater, and i would happily accept a little body damage driving through their little toll gate or whatever they have.
If its a private development I suppose thats another issue. Not enough detail in the story.

(21 posts)The cross street has private road signs posted. Google street view camera car didn't continue down Cedar Avenue beyond this intersection. Several other streets leading into the neighborhood had private road signs posted. Looks like people use this to bypass the traffic on Hwy 210/Roland Avenue to get to the beach.

(6,843 posts)Good for them. I live on a private road that the Harley riders love to use in the summer. Since I actually own a section of the road, this gives me ideas.

(1,533 posts)I imagine that 210 is backed up horribly every week when the rental houses are changing over. Drive through the neighborhood and jump back on to 210 right before the bridge to the barrier island. Cedar gives the residents two exits to their neighborhood, but probably also makes a good way to bypass tourist traffic.

(17,306 posts)I don't think you'd be a popular addition to the local HOA meeting or whatever they have going on.

(2,201 posts)The people that live on that private road are part of the public, and ALSO pay for the public ones....just like you and me.
However, you and I don't pay anything for the maintenance of their road.
You're argument would be kind of like saying that the City should charge me every time I wanted to leave my driveway because I won't allow the public to park in my driveway.

(50,950 posts)Although, those living on the wrong end of the road won't like it. It would be to make it so there is only one entrance and exit.
