Yet another insidious effort to suppress voter registration

A long-time Texas Democratic activist has been doing a lot of voter registration efforts over the years. He spoke to a group I attended a couple of days ago and reports a new wrinkle.

Now there are new barriers to getting mail-in voter registration cards in bulk in Texas. Venues that used to keep stacks available are suddenly finding the process too onerous. Now one has to apply for the cards, they are doled out in limited supply, have to be picked up in person, and when the supply runs out the whole process has to be repeated, he said. I don't remember whether there's a cost involved in getting them now too.

Before, stacks of the cards were available at certain grocery stores, Mexican restaurants, and other widely accessible community centers. Places that have historically put out the registration cards aren't this year. So that leaves registering in person with a relatively limited number of deputized voter registrars. Pretty insidious strategy to reduce new applications.

3. Not sure what's going on, but people can register online or request postage paid applications.

I’d check with local Democratic headquarters and get the story. This is not insurmountable, although maybe not as easy as handling out prepaid registration applications.

7. I know lots of people aren't online, that's why local Democratic organizations help them.

Clearly, it's better to hand out cards and say fill this out and mail it in, or have them fill it out right there and mail them in mass. But, if that is no longer possible -- for some inane or nefarious reason -- we gotta do something different. Right this minute, getting people registered is the most important thing anyone can do.

Anyway, I get we are all for the same thing -- a blue tsunami in November.

...the infotainment industry (and its love affair with false equivalencies), the electoral college (a vestige of slavery) and the vast overrepresentation of rural America, it's amazing that we aren't in an even bigger power-deficit.

Republicans simply can't win without cheating, and Democrats should make that a talking point.

9. It may be an artifact of Democratic voter registrar enthusiasm

I checked with my county’s LWV. It’s apparently not a problem in my county, but is in Austin (Travis County) and Houston (Harris Co.). The LWV head deputy voter registrar here says it’s happening only in counties with unusually high numbers of registrars.
