Romney had to do something. His campaign was cartwheeling toward total destruction. His polls were sinking, he was becoming a laughing stock and the questions about his tax returns wouldn't go away.

The campaign needed this veep distraction to change course.

They revised their plans and steered their ship off of the rocks they've been crashing into since even before his Olympic/Israel gaffes and

They had no choice.

Hell might as well get in a car without breaks and drive fast towards the end of a cliff.
