Dems force Senate shutdown to protest Kavanaugh hearing

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/democrats-force-senate-shutdown-to-protest-brett-kavanaugh-hearing

Senate Democrats on Wednesday forced the Senate to adjourn shortly after 1 p.m. to protest the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, although the move did not disrupt the ongoing confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Under Senate rules, unanimous consent is required for committees to hold hearings after 2 p.m. But Democrats withheld that consent, and without it, Republicans had to choose between either keeping the Senate in session and shutting down Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing, or adjourning the Senate so the hearing could continue.

Republicans chose the latter, and the Senate was adjourned shortly after 1 p.m., after Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the floor that Democrats were making the move to protest Kavanaugh.

McConnell indicated the Democrats' move was an minor inconvenience, and said the Senate would reconvene as normal on Thursday.

famous for firing Watergate's special prosecutor in the Saturday Night Massacre after two superiors refused and resigned. A court ruled that Bork's firing of Archibald Cox was an illegal action. Those 6 Republicans then knew he wasn't SCOTUS materian, but Republicans have been pretending ever since that the refusal to confirm Bork was unjust and due to partisan malice.

but with Myers, it was clearly a vanity choice of a person wholly unqualified, and she graciously withdrew after a short time. i don't remember her ever having a hearing. that was way back in the naughts and there was possibly a republican or 2 who would not have voted to confirm. ah, the good ol' days when the president was just a buffoon being puppeteered by a slimy Cheney and setting off the endless war. republicans have evolved and now are engaged in steering us off the cliff into annihilation at the behest of. of donald fucking trump?!

and some Republicans voted against him while some Democrats voted for him. In Myers case it was the GOP who both had severe problems with her qualifications and feared she was squishy on abortion who sunk her.

The rules were different then, requiring 60 votes for confirmation. Mitch McConnell changed that rule last your so that Gorsuch could get confirmed. So in the past, an element of bipartisanship was required, which is no longer the case.

In one of the first three chapters the author asserts that Mitch McConnell has been taking donations from Russians or entities associated with the Russian oligarchs for two decades. So you can reach your own conclusions about how the Republicans feel about the U.S. rule of law.

When Republicans came back from their recent visit to Russia and were singing from the Putin songbook it was heart stopping.

If we can ever vote in overwhelming numbers and regain control of our government I hope that the Dems will move to add two more justices to the SCOTUS and begin the great reversal.

if the truth about 2016 comes about and trump is delegitimized i'd like to see gorsuch (and kavanaugh) removed on that basis. thomas is corrupt so deepsix him. but absent all that, raising the size of the court i think would be a good move.

It's a nest of fascists through and through, imo. And I'm only up to chapter 3.

Trump, no doubt, learned how to be buddies with mobsters from his father who did business with them in Brooklyn. So mobsters and oligarchs are his peers, familiars and associates. He's way more comfortable with their strong arm mentality than with our representative form of government.

No business after 2pm, period, until we have the majority back. Then end that rule.

Enact a new rule: kick McConnell in the nuts to keep the Senate working after 2.
