It's very difficult to tell what to believe anymore, particularly at first impression. Most of the blame, of course, goes to Trump and his administration and their incessant carping about fake news. But some blame gets to go to the media for not realizing (or, if they realized it, for not telling the public) that when Trump yammers on about "fake news," he really means "news I don't like." The media took an inordinately long time to get to the end of Trump's credibility and actually (sometimes) say "Without evidence" or "Without proof," Trump says, blah blah blah.

Now the New York Times is asking the United States to trust them when they publish an anonymous White House staffer trying to reassure us that it's all good in the hood, and nameless, faceless flunkies are on the lookout to stop any really, really bad or stupid things Trump wants to do. Sorry we're not all comforted by that, New York Times, and there are a LOT of reasons for it.
