Connecticut woman mistakes dynamite for candle during power outage, suffers severe hand injuries

Updated 1 hr 42 mins ago

Excerpt:

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut -- A woman was seriously injured in Connecticut after authorities say she mistook a stick of dynamite for a candle.

The Bridgeport Fire Marshal's Office has concluded its initial investigation and is calling the incident a tragic accident.

Officials say the family's Lindley Street home lost power as a result of thunderstorms Thursday night, and after a trip to a closed Home Depot to purchase emergency lighting, the family remembered what they believed to be candles left in the basement of the home by the previous residents.

The victim, who is approximately 30 years old and a married mother of two, attempted to light one of the "candles." Instead, it was a quarter stick of dynamite. She suffered severe injuries to one of her hands, including the potential loss of several fingers. She also suffered serious injuries to her face.

I think all have lights that shine through the camera port. The light is very brilliant and lights up everything around me.

The lesson here is to check that any candles left from a previous resident to make sure they are actually candles

They likely had plenty of light in their hands. My IPhone has the light app as an icon, I just sweep to it and turn it on.

Like check to make sure that candles are not dynamite.

I was not proposing using the phone light to light the house for the night, just use it to help figure other stuff out.

That being said, I don't do the 'candles during a power outage' thing.

My strategy is supposed to be flashlights, although I have no idea where I put them or if there are batteries in them. Smh.

It is labeled, you just have to read the lable. I honestly have never seen candles that look like a package of dynamite or old time hazard flares. A phone light being used would have made a world of difference.

to a store and then back again, then down into a dark basement to rummage around and find a strange feeling candle.....
so attempted to.... what...light it in a dark basement?
carry it upstairs ( stairs? dark?) and light it then?

hmmm......quite strange.

The question becomes who the hell were the previous residents and why did they leave Dynamite behind when they moved out???
