David Brock I knew Brett Kavanaugh during his years as a Republican operative. Don't let him sit on the Supreme Court.
We were part of a close circle of cynical hard-right operatives being groomed for much bigger things.

Twenty years ago, when I was a conservative movement stalwart, I got to know Brett Kavanaugh both professionally and personally.Brett actually makes a cameo appearance in my memoir of my time in the GOP, "Blinded By The Right." I describe him at a party full of zealous young conservatives gathered to watch President Bill Clinton's 1998 State of the Union address just weeks after the story of his affair with a White House intern had broken. When the TV camera panned to Hillary Clinton, I saw Brett at the time a key lieutenant of Ken Starr, the independent counsel investigating various Clinton scandals mouth the word "bitch."
But there's a lot more to know about Kavanaugh than just his Pavlovian response to Hillary's image. Brett and I were part of a close circle of cold, cynical and ambitious hard-right operatives being groomed by GOP elders for much bigger roles in politics, government and media. And its those controversial associations that should give members of the Senate and the American public serious pause.
Call it Kavanaugh's cabal: There was his colleague on the Starr investigation, Alex Azar, now the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Mark Paoletta is now chief counsel to Vice President Mike Pence; House anti-Clinton gumshoe Barbara Comstock is now a Republican member of Congress. Future Fox News personalities Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson were there with Ann Coulter, now a best-selling author, and internet provocateur Matt Drudge. --snip--
Like millions of Americans this week, I tuned into Kavanaugh's hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee with great interest. In his opening statement and subsequent testimony, Kavanaugh presented himself as a "neutral and impartial arbiter" of the law. Judges, he said, were not players but akin to umpires objectively calling balls and strikes. Again and again, he stressed his "independence" from partisan political influences.
But I don't need to see any documents to tell you who Kavanaugh is because I've known him for years. And I'll leave it to all the lawyers to parse Kavanaugh's views on everything from privacy rights to gun rights. But I can promise you that any pretense of simply being a fair arbiter of the constitutionality of any policy regardless of politics is simply a pretense. He made up his mind nearly a generation ago and, if he's confirmed, he'll have nearly two generations to impose it upon the rest of us. --more--

(51,627 posts)I am so upset about this biased liar being on the SCOTUS. I did manage to voice my concern and will continue to call until he is dismissed as a candidate.
Call the Senate (202)224-3121 DC Offices. RESISTANCE WORKS! Join me and fight for our democracy!
Here is a list of contact info for the GOP senators and Dem senators who may be "iffy".

All of his "penance" has not chipped away at the horrible outcome of his decisions from back then.
I'm glad he's trying, but sometimes the mistakes of your youth will haunt you later no matter how different you become.

(37,648 posts)Having liberals say he shouldn't be on the S.Ct. won't be listened to by any of the Republicans. And if there are a few who are uncomfortable with it, they have to confirm him, or they'll have to leave the party. This is one of the biggest votes their party members will ever have to make, and they expect everyone to come together and make it happen. The pressure on any mavericks is immense. Not that there would be any mavericks concerning his confirmation. I haven't heard any doubt from any Republican.
This is a horrible turn of events. What the hell has happened to the country.

(81,498 posts)We finally - FINALLY!!!! - have some fighting Dems who seem willing to go all out, to the bitter end. Ive not seen that kind of muscle being shown AND flexed by Democrats since I first started really paying attention.
Its refreshing and encouraging - and NOW is when you and I and everyone who can should, no - MUST call in or tweet to them or send an email or SOME communication to a) let your favorite Dem or hometown rep know theyre on the right track as they fight this like hell! If you dont have a Democrat to encourage, call or message or otherwise post encouragement to somebody elses. Positive reinforcement lets them know theyre doing what you want.
And b) give them solidarity and calcium for their backbones if theyre wavering at all or face trying to hold on in trump country. They especially need to know that people have their back. Prop em up and supply calcium supplements to their backbones!
After all, isnt the main point More Please!
But they wont know youre with them if you dont let them know. Its important.

There's not much I can do locally. Only nationally.
True, it's not over. But the reality is what it is. Republicans are the deciders. I'm looking for any uncomfortableness among them with Kavanaugh. I'm not seeing it. Even Susan Collins.
Imagine if the situation were reversed. This is our one chance to get a Democrat confirmed to the S.Ct., making it a majority Democratic court. A chance to shape the country for decades. This is it. Our last and only shot at it. What do you think Democratic Senators and the Democratic voters would do to the Democrat who votes against our nominee? You think he'll ever be supported by the party or voters again as a Democrat? I don't think so. His career as a Democrat would be over. And WE are nicer than the Reubs, who generally fall in line much more than Democrats do.
So it's not over til the fat lady sings. But it was 99% over before it began. All the Dems can do is make an official record, be vocal in pointing out what kind of person Kavanaugh is, and rev up the base for the mid-terms. Plus get some national tv heroic time to jump start their presidential aspirations. Which is the name of the game for politicians and goes along w/the territory.
Unless you've heard any inkling of doubt among any of the Republican Senators? I haven't, but maybe I've missed something. They know the score. They know the stakes.

(81,498 posts)None at all.
You have EVERY RIGHT to call in and make your voice heard, and your opinion count. Even in red states there are Democrats and none of you should be overlooked. None of your interests and priorities should be hidden or ignored.
The only reason the squeaky wheel gets the grease is because it started making noise.
And how do you know nobody else is weighing in fromour side of the aisle? How do you know more of those who share YOUR view are activated enough to call in? Id urge you to do it ANYWAY. Sometimes these jerks need to be reminded that they dont only represent their own partisans. There are OTHERS they have to consider, too. Especially if the numbers tally up greater than the numbers calling in from their own side of the aisle.
This particular election year, EVERY republi-CON is feeling the heat. Feeling in shaky ground. Keep that in mind. Their vulnerability is your friend.

(37,648 posts)And a few others. We speak out. We speak with the truth, with facts & figures, reminding them of the children in cages, etc.
And still come the posts by the Senators about how fine a man Kavanaugh is, how great the tax cut bill has made the economy, how they support ICE unlike the socialists, how crazy the hearing disruptor Democrats are, etc.
When I used to let things slide, I don't. I speak back. As do some others. None of the garbage they spout goes unchallenged, as long as we see it.
There is no Dem. Party chapter in my area. Yet...there is a large Af. American population. I'm sure they don't vote, or the Repubs wouldn't win by such large margins. Their community is stricken with a big drug problem, and of course crime that matches any large city. I recently moved back here, so I don't have the background on that, since it wasn't that way when I left decades ago.
I'm just getting settled here (a year), or I would have had time to check into that.
I would help with the young vote, but they're majroity Republican, too.

(33,430 posts)TV thrives on noise. Give it to them. As recommended above, call, email or tweet what your concerns are. If there is enough noise on tv, those Repugs who are not retiring will get scared of the publicity (election).
Make some noise. Every who down in whoville needs to be heard.

(16,254 posts)It will be an eye-opener when you see all the familiar names of some who have "been trained" by the Republicons from
years ago. You'll certainly recognize some of the names and understand how they can be so corrupt and poisoned
in their beliefs. One happy family.
After reading this, along with the other revelations, I can't imagine how anyone could vote for him except Repubs.
I also predict a divorce in the future, unless this marriage is stronger than I would guess.
