Yes, it is a "nothing-burger" in the serious sense but I have laughed out loud by myself a number of times watching this kid and the expressions on his face. To read of his other little jokes makes the story even funnier. He is a 17-year old boy! Clearly, he planned ahead and was punking the adults--the book, the rose. Please--just enjoy his antics. Allow yourself the time to appreciate his efforts and share in his humor.

spectacle, I might add. There were a lot of clean cut young guys running around with ear thingies and wearing suits. I was quite sure none of these were SS, but simply playing a part. They were obviously part of a local student group. I can imagine that they’d love to play the part of an SS agent to some unsuspecting kid.
