I know what the districts are doing regarding early voting and the disparity, but I am in a battle with family on FB and want to make sure I don't mess up.

The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)Obama basically replied 'Why not give it to everyone'?
The rw sees that as he wants to deny it to vets (makes a good sound byte) when it simply is not true (we could spin it that the rw does not want firefighters and cops to be able to vote early, etc).

(9,080 posts)"When I read stories this weekend that said the Obama campaign was suing to restrict the voting rights of military in Ohio, my blood got boiling. Of course, Think Progress has already documented that story, inflamed by the Romney campaign, is patently false. In fact, the Obama campaign was suing to block an Ohio law which restricts a very successful early voting program in the state. The Presidents campaign was trying to keep expanded voting rights in place for everyone, military included. So, why am I still so disturbed?
Because Mitt Romney, by supporting the Ohio law that would do away with three days of early voting for all but those covered under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voter Act (UOCAVA), is supporting the restriction of voting rights for as many as 913,000 Ohio veterans. This includes military retirees with over 20 years of service and multiple deployments. In short, Mitt Romney supports efforts to make voting more difficult for the very people who have put their lives on the line after swearing an oath to uphold our Constitution and democracy."

on edit: simply put there are about 913,000 military retirees who no longer have UOCAVA, because they are not covered by that once they leave the military. So in essence they become civilians. The are among the rest of Ohioans who will lose out if the early voting is ended for the counties they are trying to disenfranchise voters from.

The Obama campaign sued Ohio to keep the early-voting ban from taking effect. The lawsuit says it's unconstitutional to extend voting opportunities for one class of voters -- the military -- but not others. According to the suit, the purpose of legal action is "to restore in-person early voting for all Ohioans during the three days prior to Election Day," military and nonmilitary alike...
After the election in 2004, it was discovered that thousands of voters had been effectively disenfranchised due to long lines and faulty machinery, necessitating the expansion of early voting in the state. More than 1.7 million Ohioans voted early in the 2008 presidential election.

(811 posts)Ohio however has ended early voting the weekend prior to Election Day to all except members of the military and their families and voters overseas. The Obama campaign initiated a lawsuit to restore early voting to all Ohioans."
So Obama is NOT trying to "limit" or hurt ANYONE's voting rights in any way. The lawsuit only seeks to RESTORE the voting rights that were taken away from everyone except the Military.
Therefore, Romney's claims are an out and out LIE.

(12,287 posts)except for military. Obama is suing to restore the early voting for everyone back to what it was before. Rmoney is saying that Obama is suing to stop all the early voting for that last weekend instead of suing to reinstate it as it was.
