That is very bad news for our Carolina brethren.
I hope they are heeding the evacuation orders.

(8,311 posts)They aren't a great deal except during this time, but still, compared to the Hilton, for a direct ocean view it's the cheapest hotel I know about on Bogue Banks. I stayed there actually right after Irene -- the main issue was rough surf and it making tires wash up still. But they were open and the rooms were $80 a night that close to even a bare brush by a Cat1.
Looked like yesterday they were packing up and asking guests to prepare to leave -- they have a webcam facing the south, the beach. Since about 5 PM yesterday they got everything off the beach, and I've only seen people either walking or trying to get debris up that could fly.
The track is looking like they'll be closed a lot longer than for a Cat1. Praying for them as I watch the webcam.

(269,004 posts)This will be a heart-breaking and costly mess. Hope your hotel survives.

(8,311 posts)He loved the beaches of North Carolina, staying as close to it as possible. After Carolina Beach got too touristy he seemed to prefer the Crystal Coast, so showed me the little "hole in the wall" places for good fresh seafood, etc. Clamdigger has a decent restaurant, had a good little bar, and some of the last pictures of him healthy I have are on that stretch of beach.
And, very reasonable walk-up rates when they needed the hotel full.

(269,004 posts)We always avoid touristy beaches and used to love the little holes on the coast.

(22,144 posts)the Clamdigger last night 🙂. Atlantis has a webcam too. I'll keep an eye on things as well. The Atlantis Lodge has been there since the early 1960's! I hope that area is not devastated 😕.

(8,311 posts)I have huge memories of posing for photos with Dad, and our playful nature ending up with a picture showing us mock-choking each other on the beach... perfect.
Also, glad you got out safe! Seriously. I loved my father but he rode out Fran without evacuating. Aka, he had some streaks showing a distinct lack of self-preservation at times.

(22,144 posts)and he is the one who introduced me to the Carolinas in 1974. I love both North and South Carolina. 🙂 We used to camp in the Croatan National Forest and then just drive down to the beach. Always stopping for a meal at the Sanitary Restaurant in Morehead City.
We hoped Florence would turn north and decided to risk driving down. We were only at the Atlantis for 17 hours.
