2. Wow. The racist dog whistles are now all bullhorns in the Trump era.

Being openly racist is now ok because to be otherwise for some is giving in to what they call political correctness.
Trumps bigotry has green lighted them and many are expressing their pent up rage of having a black man up in the WHITE House for 8 years.
There are many more bigots in this country than many of us ever thought possible in 2018.

It's not that any depiction of the event would have been racist. It is the way it was actually made. I don't think any white person would have been ever drawn like this.

6. Plus the opponent seems to have blonde hair.

The actual opponent in this tennis match is not white, but is drawn to look white in this cartoon. Whether a Freudian slip or a deliberate dog whistle, that tiny detail adds to my suspicion that the depiction of Serena Williams is racially motivated and fueled by white resentment.

All it lacks is the bone through the nose and a spear.

“This is what Australia does,” said Shareena Clanton, an Aboriginal Australian actress and activist. “This is what it has always done to people of color and, in particular, black women who reach the top.”

“This whole cartoon is vile,” she added, saying that Ms. Williams’s opponent, Naomi Osaka, had been drawn as a white woman. “The fact that it was printed and passed the editor’s room speaks even more volumes about the landscape of our media here in Australia.”

Chris Kindred, a cartoonist in Richmond, Va., said it only confirmed what many Americans already knew. “It’s nothing new,” he said. “Australia has an issue confronting racism. Water is wet.”

Give me a break. He portrayed a wonderful, gorgeous black woman as grotesque. Just the fact that he found something so trivial worthy of negative cartooning is racist. The fact that he won't give her the benefit of the doubt is racist.
