US President Donald Trump cancels controversial planned visit to Ireland
Trump had been due in Ireland on 12 November
Cancellation of visit will be a relief to Taoiseach and Irish government
US President Donald Trump has cancelled his visit to Ireland planned for later this year, Independent.ie understands.
Sources say the controversial trip, planned for November 12, will not now go ahead.
The development will come as a massive relief to the Government.
Mr Trump was planning to spend one day in Dublin before travelling to Doonbeg, Co Clare where he owns a golf link.
The stopover was on his way home from Armistice Day commemorations in France on November 11.
Sources have indicated to Independent.ie that his entire European itinerary is now under review - but the Irish element is set to be cancelled.

(81,302 posts)I dont think hed resign unless the GOP physically grabbed him and carried him out of the White House.
If he were somewhere overseas, hes automatically become a flight risk. What would stop him from visiting the nearest Russian embassy? Then technically hed be on Russian soil and no longer reachable by US law or law enforcers.
I think hed try to sneak away and beat the rap. Hed never want to lower his royal extra-entitled self to face questioning or charges or any kind of custody. Hes a king and supreme leader and dictator, dontchaknow. Facing charges is like paying taxes. As Leona Helmsley once said, only the little people have to do that.

(10,749 posts)Thank you, Ireland, for setting the stage for this. Now other countries where a visit is planned, disinvite him. Cite security, whatever. Just disinvite him.
Then. . . no further invitations, from anywhere.
Then, in response to US requests for a visit, for any reason, just say no. No thanks. We have to wash our hair that weekend. Sorry, got other plans. Oh, that won't work, all of our nation's grandmothers are going to die that day and so many funerals need to be planned. Whoops, that won't work. We're having a national happiness day, and we think you just won't fit in.
If dictators want to invite him, and he accepts, that's fine, I guess. Let's see, that could leave the Philippines, Myanmar, Russia, Venezuela, Central African Republic, and a few others.

(779 posts)That there had been protests already about his upcoming visit. They adore Obama in Ireland and have many places named after him.
Obama's other had relatives still in the old country.
