I will never forget that day. I was in the 8th grade Social Studies class when the classroom phone rang. After he hung up the phone, Mr. Bolduc informed the class that the President had been murdered. Girls in the class started crying. I sat there stunned. My world changed that day, and not for the better.

I was in 10th grade and standing at my locker when someone yelled out that Kennedy had been shot. We all ran to the auditorium where a TV was playing the news. We all sat there and cried. I cried for days.

Our nun disappeared from class for a few minutes. We didn't know why. A few minutes later she returned, and said "girls, nobody scream. The President is dead."

We all were shocked into silence. The lunch bell rang. We all filed down toward the cafeteria, mute. Our class had a special extra-long table already set up to celebrate the birthday of one of our classmates. Ordinarily the birthday table set-up was a big deal, and everyone looked forward to it. The whole class sat together with the birthday girl in the place of honor and ranking where the older "table girls" always sat: at at the head of the table. It was an event, and there were cupcakes or something special that were served - just to the class with the birthday girl. And it was always a raucous experience, lots of fun, and always the noisiest table in the lunchroom. I think the first time I ever saw somebody fly a paper plate across the room like a frisbee was from somebody's birthday table. LOVED those paper plates! You could also use those paper plates as catapults, and send an empty milk carton several feet up into the air! Not THAT Friday.

I remember feeling sorry for her. Nobody felt like celebrating. Nobody even said very much. We all sat there like stones. I remember thinking - what a terrible day to try to celebrate a birthday.

9/11 or The Bowling Green Massacre?
Today would be a good day to ask.
