Eric Garland says this is a BFD because... "This is now GUIDING PRECEDENT that all those SuperPACs, PACs, fake charities, and other money laundering, democracy-destroying money sewers HAVE TO SAY EXACTLY WHO GAVE THEM MONEY. And the "free speech" argument? DOA. 😈"
Dear Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan, get ready!

Yup! And maybe SCOTUS might overturn, but for now, its the law of the land. So COUGH UP THE NAMES! Better hope that they dont involve offshore LLCs! And those LLCs better not commingle with the profits of organized crime, or youre going down for RICO, bitches! 🤣🖕

(38,497 posts)Which is why ALL Repubs HAVE to get Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court! They don't care if he's a perjurer. So are they.

(23,946 posts)statement by the 9th Circuit that having a few less bucks to distort democracy with because names will be named is fucking NOT an infringement of 1A will be rejected by the fascist majority on the "high" court just as it was in citizen's United.
If hate speech is protected...how the fuck are a few wealthy donors names???

(46,166 posts)At least ferret them out like ones from Russian born American citizens who have close connections to Putin.

(27,804 posts)this ruling will be thrown out for sure.
This involves the Kochs and the Mercers and the other evil Trump-loving billionaires, and this type of ruling "just won't do" for the Trump Crime family.
K&R, thanks for posting

(2,574 posts)It makes even clearer now why McConnell & Repugs' UNITED front fought like their life was depending on keeping the seat for Gorsuch
and now pushing Krackpot,Kriminal Kavanaugh through so fast. Their own donor histories, indeed the Repug's entire dark money infrastructure they knew would be exposed if this pending case/decision were not voted down @SCOTUS.
BTW don't think Stephens would have been the "swing vote" and the case/circuit court decision would not have been reversed at SCOTUS. As Charles Pierce so often reminds us of Stephens willfully, historically naive opinion in CITIZENS UNITED that anonymity protection for donors will not lead to corruption/impropriety. To Stephens keeding donor ids secret no biggie, no threat to a functioning sovereign, democracy.

(23,946 posts)"They (plaintiffs) challenge the Attorney General of Californias collection of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 990 Schedule B, which contains the names and addresses of their relatively few largest contributors. The Attorney General uses the information solely to prevent charitable fraud, and the information is not to be made public except in very limited circumstances. The plaintiffs argue the states disclosure requirement impermissibly burdens their First Amendment right to free association by deterring individuals from making contributions."
So the information collected as to names and addresses, is identical to information the IRS collects to prevent charity fraud, is not made public. Still they will be policed and authorities at least will know if other election laws, offshore money, was contributed, or suspected.

(23,946 posts)many entities disguised as charities but obviously for election purposes only.
The Feds do this to monitor the charities for potential fraud...it is their right and duty. The fed tax folks are NOT to disclose names or address to the public, except under limited circumstances, such as for prosecution.
The California law is the same on public disclosure...limited...to what extent, I have got into the weeds only so far.
The thing is that disclosure will allow authorities to have intel on who...and red flags can be investigated.
As an aside, the Koch tried to use 1960's laws that outed NAACP member lists, members then killed or intimidated, to argue this is...the same...unbelievable stuff to try to present to appeal court judges...who laughed them out...politely.
