Surprisingly, the Senate Is Now in Play

Despite heavy odds stacked against them, Democrats are in the hunt
ROLL CALL Stuart Rothenberg Sep 12, 2018

ANALYSIS — I have argued repeatedly that while the House is up for grabs — and indeed likely to flip to the Democrats in November — the Senate is not in play. I now believe that it is, so I must revise and extend my remarks.

Only about three weeks ago, I reiterated my view that Democrats didn’t have a path to a net gain of two Senate seats, which they need for a chamber majority. But a flurry of state and national polls conducted over the past few weeks suggest Democratic prospects have improved noticeably, giving the party a difficult but discernible route for control.

Democrats are at least even money to flip two GOP-held Senate seats in November — Arizona and Nevada. Both races are very competitive, but President Donald Trump’s problems, the midterm dynamic and the two states’ fundamentals — Trump lost Nevada and barely carried Arizona — surely give Democrats a narrow but clear advantage in both states.

Months ago, I acknowledged a long-shot Democratic opportunity in Tennessee, largely because of the reputation of their high-quality nominee, former Gov. Phil Bredesen. But I didn’t take Bredesen’s chances against the Republican nominee, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, seriously given the state’s partisan bent and Trump’s strong showing there two years ago.

I’m still skeptical about Bredesen’s prospects, but recent polls show that the race is for real. I can no longer simply dismiss his chances.

That one seems to be flying under the radar while folks look at Beto's excellent run so far in TX and shouldn't be of lesser value than AZ per the article's author.

We could stop Shitler's and the GOP party reign of terror immediately!

That evil bastard would be the lamest of ducks till his impeachment or massive defeat in 2020, whichever comes first!

I agree about Beto too!

We need to once again bring "regular order" back to Congress so that they can fulfill their role of oversight and representing "the people".

But Democrats will also need to perfect dealing with the result - the fact that the GOP only knows how to operate by "going on the attack" ("opposition party" ) versus actually governing (which is why they have sat silent as things fall apart around them while they control all the branches). They can't keep using Pelosi as their excuse when she is not "in charge" of anything.

When and if the democratic party gains control of the government we need to do things for the people!

Solve the health care crisis once and for all with single payer/Medicare for all!

Cut back on our insane military budget. 15 dollar minimum wage. Cannabis nationwide legalization and take it the hell off schedule 1!

Student loan debt relief. Just a few ideas.....

Taking both will guarantee public hearings in both houses of Congress into the massive corruption of the Trump administration. The public would learnt he truth.

Just on a final push by the Birchers, Russians, Evilangelicals to push depressing of the vote and encourage Trumpeteers to "stick it to the Libs" by coming out en mass and voting out a Blue Dog as an immoral imperative.

Lose one or two seats, gain two or three seats; we might still muster a thin majority if we can GOTV. Voter depression and apathy will kill this country.

To hell with losing any Senate seats. We need a total wave to wipe the repubs out.

But these flimsy Democrats who do things like vote for justices that are anything but Democratic, have to be taught a lesson, so if any Democrats are to lose, I suppose it's better that those who flip their allegiance, will get a message sent their way as well.

6. Surprisingly?

It is surprising that people are fed the fuck up with the repubs and Drumpf? Sick of all the crimes, and ignoring and abetting of those crimes by the ENTIRE REPUB PARTY?

The only chance to save this country's future is the 2018 & 2020 elections. Perhaps if they are wiped out, and control is taken from them in both houses of Congress, they will get the message that they are corrupt. I doubt it, but at least we can start to recover from the hole they have dug for us.

2/3 is not possible, so no impeachment (given the utter corruption of the Russiapublican Party).

But Trump will be under 24/7 investigation from every angle, for the remainder of his ignominious reign.
