The famed documentarian, whose new film Fahrenheit 11/9 is out this month, stands accused of not only failing to pay his film-fest bills, but smearing his vendors in the press.

Last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, Michael Moore debuted his latest film, Fahrenheit 11/9. The Daily Beast described the political doc as a fast-paced, wide-reaching project, jumping from Flint, Michigan to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (and stopping along the way to compare Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler). As Natalia Winkelman wrote, Moores best zingers and most penetrating indictments land on the Democratic Party, whom he implicates (along with dominant liberal news media) as part of an establishment system continually churning in place to maintain the status quo and impede forward movement. He even calls out Obama on a few occasions: for letting down the people of Flint, for accepting Goldman Sachs money, for deporting immigrants, for drone strikes. But best of all, Moore acknowledges and emphasizes that he himself is not totally free from that establishment either.
Apparently, Michael Moore is struggling to reconcile his revolutionary brand with his status as a famous, wealthy filmmaker. Simultaneously, critics of the documentarian are calling hypocrisy, insisting that Moores conduct is at odds with his reputation as a champion of the people.
In early June, Boston Light & Sound, Inc. filed a lawsuit against Moores Traverse City Film Festival. In the claim, BL&S stated that a total payment of $256,500 had been due by September 30, 2017, for their work on the 2017 film festival. TCFF paid a $100,0000 deposit towards the Contract Amount on July 12, 2017, legal docs claimed. BL&S performed all of its obligations pursuant to the contract. However, since the 2017 film festival, TCFF has only paid an additional $2,000 toward the outstanding balance owed. That brings the alleged balance down to $159,055.
Chapin Cutler, the President of Boston Light & Sound, a 13-year Film Fest collaborator, said his 2017 contract with Film Fest, totaling $256,500, was comparable to past contracts and pricing has not changed, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. In April 2018, Michael Moore revealed that the Traverse City Film Fest ran a rare deficit last year.

(58,785 posts)Michael Moore is an Independent, btw.
Since another one was a Democrat at the time, if only temporarily, it probably should be mentioned that our candidate Bernie Sanders had some issues with unpaid bills related to his campaign, requiring some municipalities to come after him for nonpayment. National City had to file a lawsuit after over a year of nonresponse to various collection attempts. The Vista Unified School District did eventually for some unclear reason pay a Vista city bill of $6000 bill for Sanders. However, there's no indication of Moore-type conflict, most bills were eventually paid by Sanders, and this was seemingly just sloppy management.

(58,785 posts)Democrats are pretty damned clean. A counter to the constant false equalizations of Democrats with Republicans, sadly even by some here.

Local Cops: Trump, Clinton, Sanders Haven't Paid Security Bills

Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders may not remember much about the rallies they each held last year in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
But officials at Green Bay City Hall sure do. And theyre miffed the three politicos have stiffed them on police protection bills totaling $24,000.
Cash-strapped Clinton fails to pay bills

Hillary Rodham Clintons cash-strapped presidential campaign has been putting off paying hundreds of bills for months freeing up cash for critical media buys but also earning the campaign a reputation as something of a deadbeat in some small-business circles.
A pair of Ohio companies owed more than $25,000 by Clinton for staging events for her campaign are warning others in the tight-knit event production community and anyone else who will listen to get their cash upfront when doing business with her. Her campaign, say representatives of the two companies, has stopped returning phone calls and e-mails seeking payment of outstanding invoices. One even got no response from a certified letter.

(26,330 posts)The op is about Moore. Post number one brought up Trump. And post number three reminded us Moore is an independent and another independent who ran as a Democrat also failed to pay some bills in a timely fashion. I mean, who can pass up THAT opportunity? All while claiming that has never happened to any other campaign - which is demonstrably false. What am I missing here?

(58,785 posts)two who have a lot in common. Nothing new. My lifetime observation is that people who have difficulties being honest and respectful about those who don't agree with them politically tend to have at least some probity problems in general. Uber righteousness combined with bad judgement is not the best combo.
That said, Hassan, I don't suspect Sanders of intentionally cheating on his bills. However, filing baseless lawsuits as a dirty political ploy and then dropping them before the discovery phase shows them to be without merit is a repetitive pattern I do imagine might be repeated in 2020. Since it's worked for him before.

(58,785 posts)Not about running short of money during one period and paying late.
And, no, it's not 2016 any more. But unless I missed it, Sanders is still in the game, which means his willingness to walk away from bills is of public interest. I'd like to know why that $6,000 came out of a school district budget. Did the schools have more money than they could use? That was likely some local legerdemain and nothing to do with him, but it would have been nice if Sanders had paid the bill.
I actually agree it is a bit of a cheap shot, bringing up such small matters in the life of a towering national figure, as seen by many loyal followers at least, who doesn't even write his own checks. I was just amused that being hard wired to dissent, labeling themselves as Independents, and being constitutionally unable to miss a good chance to badmouth Democrats, even when it risks electing Republicans, are not the only things these two have in common.
