Woodward book breaks 93-year publishing record (Fear: Trump in the White House)

BY JOE CONCHA - 09/13/18 08:47 AM EDT

Bob Woodward's new book, "Fear: Trump in the White House," sold more than 750,000 copies through its first day of release, the most for any title in Simon & Schuster history, according to the 94-year-old publisher.

The investigative book by the veteran Watergate reporter, who has written books about every administration dating back to President Nixon, was powered by excerpts published before the book's public release Tuesday and President Trump's public rejection of it. Trump called the book "a con on the public" consisting of quotes that are "made up frauds" designed to boost Democrats ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

The 750,000-plus copies sold combines sales of print copies, ebooks and audiobooks, according to a statement by Simon & Schuster.

The publisher also announced that it ordered a ninth printing, sending the total number of hardcover copies in print above 1.15 million.

Trump can't indulge his usual juvenile taunts of "unpopular" or "failing" with Woodward's book. I sure hope no one brings this up on the Emperor Trump's twitter feed or mentions it to Sarah Sanders.

I'm 75% through the audio version on audible. Sometimes it feels a bit "cathartic" but it isn't really covering too much new territory, between all that I read here, the Michael Wolff book, and being a vociferous online newspaper consumer.

What I do find, is that Bannon, Porter, Cohn and Priebus are clarly the most utilized sources. Porter and Cohn I find myself minding less so than Bannon. Uggh.

Most of the stuff in it (and yes I've read it) is typical Trumpism.

Ukraine is mentioned a total of two times when it's obviously the nexus of this whole thing.

... but he's not allowed to publish it yet. I'm sure he checked with Mueller on what he can put in the book, for now. Don't worry another book will come out after this is over. If there's an impeachment, then he'll write two books.

He should've dropped more hints if he had that kind of information.

I think Trumps people are extremely cagey on Russia and indeed a lot of what Woodward writes almost seems a caricature of what Trump would be like (though accurate).

... he barely mentions Russia and Ukraine in his book that came out about 6 months ago. And yet, we all know this guy saw all the evidence, the un-redacted Steele dossier, the deep web datafiles, all of it. I think they're being really careful about publishing anything before Mueller releases his report. Even after his report is out, some things will still be held back in case they're needed for trials.

But you may be right about Woodward, maybe he didn't want to dig too deep because his sources were avoiding the subject.

Wolff, Omarosa, et al. could all be held into question, but not Woodward. I even heard one commentator (of some repute) say that he would stake his life on anything that Woodward wrote, as it was so meticulously researched and documented and cross-checked.

This made it all the more hilarious when Trump tweeted that Woodward had been having "credibility issues." Right - 19 highly acclaimed books later! And, by the way, Donny - he actually wrote it HIMSELF.

I called my local Barnes & Noble, as I was going to cancel my Amazon order, but they told me that even though they had ordered what they thought was plenty, every one sold out in the morning! It would be days before they got more in.

Meanwhile, I got The Husband a fresh copy of All the President's Men.

Numerous mishaps and the like.

Woodward has been around the block and knows what he is doing, author-wise. Plenty of research and documentation. He did write about Nixon and that period of time too, so has experience in dealing w/ hot button topics like this.

The person that told me also explained the book was the fastest selling in 3 years. I was expecting him to ask me if I wanted to order the book but he didn't. I didn't push it. I thought if nothing else I go home and try ordering it.

But before going home, I stopped at Costco and they had a few copies of it. It wasn't sticker as being discounted but cost less than from B&N or Amazon. So happy days.

There's a signed first edition up for auction on ebay and it's really tempting to bid on it. This book may be one of the biggest nails in Trump's coffin.
