1. He's a good looking, charismatic guy. Nike knows what they are doing on this.

They are obviously benefiting from the good PR as well (no one is talking slave labor, after all), but this was a good move for multiple reasons.

2. They would have had a pretty good idea as to how their customers would react before they ran the ads

Very few giant corporations spend big money based on 'gut instinct' or guesses.

At least not if they plan to stick around for a while.
