Whats the background on the life sentences commuted by CA Gov Brown?

I heard Mike Papantonio on Ring of Fire saying that Governor Jerry Brown commuted the sentences of 67 inmates sentenced to life in prison for violent crimes. I'm all for a rehabilitation focused justice system, Norway's prison system for example, has been extremely successful. But it sounded as though these inmates were simply being set free. Is that the case?

Your only mistaken impression is that you need not do something for yourself.

Had you shown the least bit of effort and then presented some text from articles to discuss it would have gotten a completely response from me.

I posted here because many DUers are extremely knowledgeable on a wide range of issues and current events. The article you provided was very helpful. I did google it first, though, but most of the articles I came up with painted a picture that portrayed things as though Brown had simply released a swath of murderers without precaution. Not right wing sources mind you, WaPo was one of the top results.
