Judge orders MO CLEAN amendment removed from the ballot

https://themissouritimes.com/53919/judge-orders-clean-missouri-amendment-removed-from-november-ballot/

CLEAN would redistrict and clean up the gerrymandering in Missouri. It would limit how much can be received from corporate groups by candidates during an election and it would reduce the amount of cash or monetary items that a sitting state politician can receive from a lobbyist to $5.00, which is why some call it the Coffee Cup Amendment. It would also ensure that large fines are levied against politicians who leave office and become lobbyists or work for a special interest group in less than two years out of office.

Paul Ritter, a Republican voter, and Daniel Mehan, the head of Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry filed the lawsuit in August arguing that the ballot measure violated Missouri law on five counts including dealing with more than one subject, amending more than one article of the Missouri Constitution, and violating the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

This is a bunch of crap. The citizens of this state signed petitions to get this on the ballot and now we supposedly will not have the opportunity to vote on it.

They said they will be fighting this further up the line but that they always knew it would be a fight.

And the corps had to make that argument, cause they know damn well they're not actually Persons.

As to the rest of it, I think I agree with the above poster...due diligence and research likely would have prevented this lawsuit. Hood to know for next time, cause it IS a good idea.

that favor business and the suit was brought forth by the Chamber of Commerce.

The organizers have always stated that they knew this would eventually be a court battle but they thought it would be after the election. There are also suits on the docket to remove New Approach, which is a medical marijuana bill on the November ballot and to remove RUM (Raise Up Missouri, a minimum wage increase). These are all backed by Republican backing groups not only to defeat these bills before ever being voted on by the public but to also keep interest down in voting in the midterm election. Right now McCaskill and Hawley are almost tied and keeping any or all of those initiatives off the ballot will decrease turn out. Lower turn outs favor the GOP.

and it was the Chamber of Commerce who brought about the suit.

They already had planned a court battle when it passes. I suspect they will be filing immediately to fight this ruling.
