Deval Patrick: 'Character of the country' is on the line in midterms

BY MICHAEL BURKE - 09/16/18 11:55 AM EDT

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) on Saturday said the "character of the country" is on the line in upcoming elections.

"When I think about the next election, whether it's 2018 or 2020 or 2022, you know, folks say that the character of the candidate is always on the ballot; I think the character of the country is on the ballot right now," Patrick said during an interview on CNN's "The Axe Files" that aired Saturday evening.

Patrick told CNN that he would "like to see this whole administration go," in reference to the Trump White House. "That's what 2020 is about, and 2018 is about putting some real oversight in the administration in the meantime," he said.

Patrick, who served two terms as governor of Massachusetts and now works for the investment firm Bain Capital, is believed to be considering running for president in 2020.

Last month, he announced a super PAC intended to help elect "progressive Democrats running for federal office" in the upcoming midterms.
