I am not trying to be a member of the SCOTUS.

While I've had multiple high-level clearance interviews I've always just told the truth. And it has worked. I've done some things in my youth, ahem, early adulthood which wouldn't be attractive now.

But I don't think this breed of politician, raised by the rove/falwell/koch/devos-like philosophy even understands that "the truth will set you free." Adherence to creeds of any type imply forgoing truthfulness. Maybe it's a bit like the mafia - "we get you to lie once, and we own you forever."
