CNN reporting that she contacted the Washington Post anonymous tip line before he was nominated to the Supreme Court in July. This is NOT some last-minute attempt to scuttle his appointment.

(92,201 posts)to mount a full campaign to disparage the victim, prevents a Thomas KANGAROO court, and creates doubt, maybe just enough to scuttle the nomination so it falls short of the votes

(11,936 posts)And Feinstein isn't the one that leaked the details of the story. I believe she has been very responsible and care with the way she has handled this.

(17,984 posts)Feinstein giggle when Trump said he would include her ideas in a bill, i thought she was easily deceived. Trump lied to her.
She sure messed this one up.

(58,785 posts)you should stick to reading the analysis of reputable and knowledgeable observers.
She was required to keep this confidential in the beginning, but she knew the story was also given to the WaPo, a major investigative journal that immediately got on the story, and that the chances the accuser could remain anonymous were almost nonexistent. Of course, it was very important that it not leak through her, which would have looked bad.
We have absolutely no way of knowing, of course, but aside from keeping carefully updated as this progressed, her biggest part may simply have been fighting to get the vote set back a week while it percolated, but our senators on the judicial committee were or course doing that for other critically important reasons anyway. And here we are.
True Blue American
(17,984 posts)Who required her to keep it secret? She made sure Grassley knew.
The WP knew it too.
Seeing a persons reaction, along with checking facts works for me. Feinstein did not let her fellow Democrats know.
Now, Grassley is questioning the timing, when he knew this in July.

(37,648 posts)She had promised not to reveal her name. She can ask a question to Kavanaugh about some allegation, but without being able to name the woman, it would have gone nowhere and just looked like the Dems were making stuff up.
She shouldn't have shown it to Grassley, though, if she wasn't able to act on it herself. That was a screwup. She was trying to be a "good girl" that Grassley approves of, rather than do her job, which in this case requires bold and not nice action.

(37,648 posts)an anonymous tip about an opposed nomination. They may have received others that were similar. They deal in facts, though. If they can't interview her, get specifics, get her name, it's really not viable.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)the big ones do -- investigative journalism, as opposed to reading stories from other papers and rewriting with their own spin.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)I'd be surprised if it did, without speaking with the source, getting dates or facts, knowing her name to know if she's real and not a plant.
I would guess they get a lot of prank calls like that.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)We also have been reading newspapers for decades and know a bit about how they work because they do explain it. Given a SCOTUS nomination, they would have assigned a whole team to investigate, working both from DC and out in California and wherever else the story went, similar to what they did when Roy Moore was first accused of sexually preying on teenage girls.
The lie detector test done by an ex- FBI agent at the attorney's request is not admissible in court but would in part have been produced FOR the WaPo investigators as they attempted to assess the validity of the accusation.
Frankly, your question strikes me as like asking if I really know if supermarkets sell candy bars. Yes, I do and they do. Why ask?
But, in any case, this is what investigative journalism is, Honeycombe8.

(37,648 posts)Frankly, your answer strikes me as like stating, "Doesn't every grocery store tear open all the packages when it gets a call that there are roaches in them by someone who then hangs up and gives no identifying information or information about which packages, or why they think so?"
It would not surprise me to learn that the big newspapers are getting multiple calls every day about "some secret" in Kavanaugh's past, by unidentified sources, and scant details, if any. Of COURSE they would not, and could not, investigate them. Waste of time.
What investigative journalists do is do a thorough investigation of a S.Ct. nominee's past well before any hearing.

(17,984 posts)It is clear this was not a last minute thing. This Judge seems to know how to go about presenting a complaint.
If Feinstein notified Grassley she should have informed her felow Democrats on the Committee, too, she let them take the brunt of insuts.
But, now the woman has come forward let us see how many Republicans show character.
True Blue American
(17,984 posts)Has come forward. Has laid out her facts very well, we will now see what happens.
We may find out more about Kavenaugh, too. One thing is clear he has been a political operative since Clinton.
I did enjoy Kenneth Starr saying yesterday that Manefort agreeing was bad news.

I go to the Y pool to exercise, but may be late or record it this morning. I will enjy seeing Joe and Mike eat crow.
Seems this woman is more qualified for the Court than Kavenaugh.
Now both Flake and Corker have doubts, let us see what Collins and Murkowski say!

I do not have confidence in any of them, especially Flake and Collins. They always talk and then cave.
My feeling is Collins will not run in 2 years if she votes for Kavenaugh.

(19,957 posts)I agree, Collins would be making a massive mistake by voting for Kavanaugh. It's not as if she didn't have cover as one of one two Pro Choice GOP Senators !

(19,957 posts)One thing though, IF this turns out to be the thing that kills the Kavanaugh nomination, DiFi will deserve all the plaudits for what would be a masterful piece of politicking. Last week, it looked to me like a Hail Mary pass that was way overthrown, but now, it might just deliver a knock out blow.

(19,957 posts)bury you into the ground. If Kavanaugh does down, it will be seismic in energizing the Dem supporters. I don't think you're being petty at all, Republicans went full steam evil and illegal. the howls of Scarborough about Difi "playing politics" (guffaw) this morning was sweet. They've dished it out for so long, they don't like it when it is done back to them (ENTIRELY legally).

All this crap about late in the game is just an excuse. Grassley knew all about this, the reason they were trying to ram the vote through so quick.
Talked to a couple of women at the Y who said they were terrified of what is happening to our Country.
One thing is clear, the power mad among us have been exposed.
