No matter what people think of the tariffs, China does not pay those tariffs, American consumers d

and as an added bonus it is inflationary

They did this during the great depression, and it drove us deeper into the depression, and continued for years as a result

It’s really no different than Trump’s reason, which is to say reasoning isn’t involved.

Lower wages than China, eager workforce and no tariffs.

Those jobs are not coming back here...period.

alternative sources. Aside from coffee mugs and cheap toasters, many things assembled here or elsewhere in the world include Chinese parts and materials. Not only will it raise prices for no good reason, it will make some thing unavailable for a while.

Imagine what Trump would have done when Sony and Toyota were rising stars...

Trump is a monster but we have been getting screwed for decades.

the only screwing involved is that public policy hasn't done a good job of making sure the benefits of international trade are properly shared between owners and customers and displaced workers.

better retraining/placement/relocation programs would go a long way to reduce the downside of international trade, leaving us to appreciate the upside.

For once someone is doing something about it. Many people agree, and not all Trump Humpers.

I hate Trump with the white hot hatred of a trillion suns, but someone needed to stand up to China.

No holds barred, WTO billionaire owner friendly, worker-environment unfriendly "free trade" is a joke. Only the billionaires and Chinese profit. Our planet is dying, and our workers aren't getting paid.

Fair Trade Not Free Trade.

It isn't free if there are no rules.

It would be like free sex.....

donnie has no clue what he is doing.

he's lumping canada in the same boat as china. he's completely clueless.

an *actual* president might carefully and skillfully be able to negotiate some improvements in the way china does things, but that has virtually nothing to do with anything donnie is doing because he's completely inept.

donnie will trash our economy with stupid tariffs, then lift them and claim victory when he gets any silly "concession" that probably only benefits himself personally and maybe a few of his billionaire friends.

19. Many of the jobs for US corporations in China

were moved there from Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. I remember as a kid in the 70s, seeing something that was "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in Japan" was often a sign of a cheap lower quality product. The biggest loss of US manufacturing jobs took place in the 1980s, which was before China opened up - it was about 23% of the economy when Carter left office and was down to 16% in 1990, so nearly 1/4 of manufacturing jobs were gone in about 10 years. Overall, the percentage has decreased since 1990, but at a much slower pace to a little under 10%

The problem is that US corporations thought China was similar to Japan & Taiwan and that they would respect things like IP/Patents. So, they did not take the needed steps to protect themselves. Plus, China has almost 10x the population of Japan and over 50x the population of Taiwan.

though again, technological advances only shift jobs. jobs aren't ever really eliminated. we'll never be at a loss for finding ways to make other people work for their survival.

the key is to provide adequate support and retraining and such for those displaced by the changes.
that and properly sharing the benefits of trade and there would really be no problem.

For years people including myself have been saying we need to increase corporate taxes so they are paying their fair share while also complaining about Chinese made goods taking jobs away from Americans

I feel like everything is turned upside down in these crazy times

Republican president proposing increased taxes on corporations and progressives in favor of free trade from countries paying low wages
