It's not the young folks' fault. If you don't understand things,

you can't use them. Here's an example of people not understanding something we all understand well:

Before you criticize young people for not knowing stuff, consider that they've never learned how to do things we all do without even thinking. But, we had to learn how, as well, but we don't remember learning that. Here's an instructional film from 1954 that people used to learn the same thing. My home town didn't get dial phones until 1963, the year I graduated from high school:

in the car. He was a new driver. A few of us were laughing about that until one person asked us how we learned to check the oil. We all agreed it was by watching the gas station attendant check the oil! Unheard of today.

I learned about that stuff from my father. You're right, though. Nobody checks the oil for you any more. Most people never check it themselves, either. Fortunately, most late model cars don't use much oil between oil changes. I haven't added oil to my car for years. But I still check it.
