Kavanaugh spokesperson/activist says it's not clear that the incident was attempted rape as opposed to just "rough horseplay".
Interesting and perhaps disturbing moment a short time ago as Carrie Severino, spokesperson of the Judicial Crisis Network, was interviewed on CNN. The JCN is the central campaign arm for Republican judicial nominations. The Federalist Society grooms and chooses the nominees. The JCN runs the campaigns, runs political ads in Senators states, as necessary. Here Severino argues that its not clear that what Ford describes wasnt simply rough horse play as opposed to attempted rape.

(3,191 posts)They believe they are too clever to get caught, so they layer on the bullshit, thinking big words and obfuscation will bolster their initial lie. It often works, especially if they are lying to someone they have bullied before. Kavanaugh is in some deep shit here.
Trying to fix lies with more lies. In a time when we are bombarded with breaking news 24/7, keeping quiet could be the best strategy. Often less is more.

(16,387 posts)There has been no talk within the ranks about pulling the nomination and going with an equally conservativeif not less controversialpick, even if it would remove a major complication from the Republican agenda just 50 days before the midterm elections. To do so, aides and operatives insist, would be a disaster of much greater magnitude: inviting Democrats to launch more aggressive challenges to future judicial nominees and depressing the very base of conservative voters needed in November.

(82,849 posts)Remember that Kavanaugh has already testified, under oath, to the Judiciary Committee, that nothing of the sort happened, he wasn't there, and neither was his buddy Mark. Now we're on "rough horseplay"? Tell us more: What was the safe word?

(5,969 posts)Nowadays, not one day passes where you don't want to throw up at the offensive and insane stuff that seems acceptable today. If you go down this route, you need to have such a rotten soul.
There is one central difference between the accusations and playing around: consent.
If you find yourself on the side that is so desperate for reasons to excuse attempted rape, you have lost and you need to reconsider. And I wish an interviewer would simply ask those creeps what they would do if their own young child would tell them a similar story. Would they ask their child whether they might have just mistaken it for rough horseplay? Or that the child should still consider the otherwise nice character of the attacker? This is such insane nonsense.

(25,251 posts)He'll withdraw his name from nomination before Monday. Even Trump seems to be distancing himself from Kavanaugh now.
The only thing that can prevent his withdrawing is that Ford refuses to show for the Monday inquisition. Then the Repugs will say - it was all an 11th hour attempt to knock out Kavanaugh and it was a bogus accusation. They'll say her not testifying is proof that it was all made up and then they would proceed with the confirmation.
But still my money is on his withdrawing before Monday.

(12,232 posts)and who launched a confirm Kavanaugh website and ads for him. Its looking more and more like they knew there was a chance of something like this coming out and had prepared for countering it. And of course, they are funded by dark money.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/sep/17/brett-kavanaugh-accuser-testify-senate-committee
The letter appears to have been orchestrated by confirmkavanaugh.com, a website funded by the Judicial Crisis Network, a group that relies upon undisclosed donations and backs conservatives for judgeships.

JCN is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit. JCN does not disclose its funders, but all of its reported revenue in 2012 and 2013 came from large contributions of more than $10,000, and contributions of more than $1 million providing more than 80 percent of JCN's total revenue in both years.

"Seven Figure" Campaign to Obstruct Appointing Justice Scalia's Replacement
"Let the People Decide" ad highlighting Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA)
In February 2016 JCN launched "a seven figure television, radio and digital advertising campaign" that would support seven Republican U.S. Senators who were trying to block hearings on any candidate President Obama nominated to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant after Justice Antonin Scalia's death. Titled "Let the People Decide," the campaign asserts that the seat should only be filled by the next President. The ads were to run in Washington, DC and the media markets covering Senators "Kelly Ayotte (NH), Chuck Grassley (IA), Ron Johnson (WI), John McCain (AZ), Mitch McConnell (KY), Rob Portman (OH), and Pat Toomey (PA)."[15] All but McConnell were up for re-election; McConnell was still serving as the Senate Majority Leader

I've been running errands with MSNBC on the radio. While moving from one place to another, I've heard:
1. Kavanaugh doesn't remember her.
2. Kavanaugh doesn't think he ever went to the party.
3. Kavanaugh doesn't think he ever met her socially or otherwise.
4. Kavanaugh now thinks it was "rough horseplay"?
Is attempting to take off ones swimsuit part of horseplay? Was he "riding" the horsey? Did the horsey say "Neigh"...maybe "Nyet"?
All he needs now is for Ghouliani to advise him.
Get this guy out of consideration. I'd guess he is about to lose his chance for a lifetime job, his old job, his wife and family. What a jerk!
