if you had to go to one of those community shelters with a bunch of cots" said my co-worker.
"What's so terrible about having a place to go that's warm and safe and dry? I asked.
"Its the people there - so dirty and walking around stealing everything. I would demand that my husband take me to a hotel."

(16,829 posts)their plans to evacuate fell through. I would expect to see my neighbors. It wouldn't even occur to me that people taking refuge were going to steal from me... because I don't think people going to a shelter bring a whole lot with them. And I don't assume that people needing help are somehow immoral, which this person apparently does.

(14,961 posts)haven't, I do know many people that have. Rich, poor, black, white, young, old there is quite a mix of evacuees. I have probably been evacuated at least 20 times in my life, I have never heard of any criminal issues. Most folks are nervous and anxious about their homes and pets/families/friends/neighbors.......and getting out ASAP to assess the damage.

They spent 3 days in a clean and decently run shelter while their granddaughter played with the other children and they chatted with others and read. They are sensible, hard-working people who are accustomed to living in a nice, very clean, and well maintained home, and when I asked they had no complaints. They'd stay there again.

(115,719 posts)who is a Red Cross volunteer, who's being deployed tomorrow to help out in NC. She will be staying in a shelter along with the people who have had to leave their homes. She didn't seem to be at all worried about staying in a shelter. She'll be there for three weeks. I really admire her, and to hell with a spoiled snowflakes who would insist on staying in a hotel - which probably wouldn't be available anyhow.
