General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAre you confident our Justice System can withstand the attacks from Donald Trump?
Will our Supreme Court be viewed credibly and legitimately after two controversial nominations from Donald Trump?
These are serious questions.
Donald Trump has attacked our rule of law. He has discredited his own Attorney General, the FBI, and our entire intelligence apparatus. He has threatened to fire anyone that disagrees with him.
He has fired one FBI Director and has threatened the present one. He has threatened the Special Counsel that is investigating Russia's interference in our election. He has fired or threaten to fire several individuals investigating Russia and Putin's roles in our last election.
Now, he is ordering the Justice Department to release top secret information regarding FISA warrants and criminal influence by Russian oligarchs. They have been put into untenable situations.
Will our Justice System continue to stand or will it fold to the wishes of Donald Trump? As concerned citizens, we must ask these questions.

(12,344 posts)I don't expect anything anymore. I do not accept any appointment, signing statement, endorsement, or statemtnt from 45.
He is a Russian agent of chaos and everything he does is "fruit of the poisined tree". IMHO. I think all of it should be wiped from the pages of history after he is brought down.
The GOP is entirley complicit in all of this. The fact that they are just going to ram this SCOTUS appointment through, is really the last straw for me.

(15,124 posts)there was no interest in impeaching Scalia or Thomas and both engaged in ethics violations that would get lowly state court judges censured or canned. Alito proudly carries the Scalia banner, accompanied by Gorsuch and soon, perhaps, Kavanaugh.
The rock of integrity that once was the SCOTUS is being chipped into a pile of gravel that can be conveniently rearranged and reshaped to suit those in power---or scattered to the winds.

So yes, our justice system will survive Trump. The line of progress is never linear, but it does bend towards justice.

(15,240 posts)Certainly Antebellum America, American Civil War and Reconstruction were terrible. I saw with my own eyes the racism push back of the Civil Rights movement. The Government corruption of Nixon and Bushs fighting and maintaining unjust wars, political leaders gunned down on the street; I have direct experience. Trump and his followers are something different, they no longer even pretend to uphold American institutions. Fascism is here and something horrible is coming. I am not sure we will survive this, the upcoming election and aftermath will be the test. Trump is a madman and too many seem ready to dismiss that fact.

(7,814 posts)worldwide effort to concentrate wealth and power into the hands of fewer and fewer....this is why the gop, Trump, and several of the world's oligarchs will go to the mat for this struggle. Many pieces are in place for them and the battle will be uphill...But I think we haven't yet seen the worst of what Trump/Pence/McConnell/Nunes/Kavenaugh will do when really challenged. Much is on the line...trillions for sure but also decades of economic and political dynamics.
No I'm not confident. We are already most of the way toward where the top .01% want to be.
