Take this with a grain of salt; it's from the Express, which seems not to be a beacon of accuracy.
This thread got the kibosh from LBN because of its source. I concur with that decision. If I can find a better (read: trusted) source for this story, I'll use that instead.
Thanks.

SPAINS Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has revealed US President Donald Trump suggested a wall in the Saharan Desert as the solution to Europes migration problems.

Mr Borrell, a former President of the European Parliament, said President Trump insisted the type of border wall with Mexico he has vowed to make his southern neighbours pay for would work for Europe as well.
The respected Spanish politician did not reveal when the controversial US leader put forward his radical solution, although diplomatic sources suggested it had been in June when he flew to the States in a trip coinciding with the visit to the White House of the Spanish King and Queen.
Mr Borrell revealed President Trumps Saharan wall solution during a lunch in Madrid organised by cultural association Club Siglo XXI, which was formed in 1969 and is known for holding respected debates, conferences and forums.
Spanish daily El Pais said that he had made it clear he disagreed with Donald Trumps diagnosis but insisted a policy had to be put in place to deal with the fact Africa would double its population in the next 20 years.

(70,521 posts).... your 20' wall which will catch sand could be covered in a matter of hours. But not to
worry the Sahara desert is the size of China so building a wall to keep all those "dark people"
to stay in their mud huts in their shit hole countries shouldn't be a problem.

always remember, Trump's various walls are, will be, and always have been a metaphor for expressing racism to a (large) segment of his rabid base.
when we ridicule the idiocy of an actual wall, we miss the point and the magats laugh at us falling for it. they're getting exactly what they want from Trump. all that's necessary to please them is expressions of white nationalist superiority, everything else is gravy.

(34,195 posts)Since this is in reference to Spain, Trump may have had the tiny Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern shores of Morocco's Mediterranean coast in mind.
Migrants who make it from Morocco into these two areas then have access to Europe,
having gained access to Spanish territory.

(23,350 posts)... and now he wants them to build a wall?
Spain has some experience here, having defeated the Moors in 1492 and ordering the expulsion of their descendants in 1609.
Perhaps Trump sees himself as the second-coming of Charles "The Hammer" Martel.
I'm guessing Trump will largely be ignored by Spain.

He'd have been the best Spanish king ever. Best leader of armies. And he'd have discovered the new world much faster.

Here's The Guardian with its own sourcing:
Donald Trump urged Spain to 'build the wall' across the Sahara
Donald Trump suggested the Spanish government tackled the Mediterranean migration crisis by emulating one of his most famous policies and building a wall across the Sahara desert, the countrys foreign minister has revealed.
According to Josep Borrell, the US president brushed off the scepticism of Spanish diplomats who pointed out that the Sahara stretched for 3,000 miles saying: The Sahara border cant be bigger than our border with Mexico.
...
Borrells comments were made at a lunch event in Madrid this week and widely reported in the Spanish media. We can confirm thats what the minister said, but we wont be making any further comment on the ministers remarks, said a spokesman for the foreign ministry.

For those who can read Spanish, here's The Guardian's source from the link above:

Remember a time when you would see a story like this about an American president, and you would automatically know it's satire. Well that's how dumb Trump is, you read things like this and you actually have to consider that it's legit, yeah it's totally possible he said this. Sad

This wall in the desert idea highlights how simple-minded Trump is. Its the kind of solution a young child would offer, not understanding its sheer absurdity due to cost, logistics and ineffectiveness.
Trump continues to boggle the mind. America deserves better.
